Thank God for John McCain! He wants to keep the shuttle infrastructure going past 2010 until wa have a viable replacement. He wants a strong space program! If you have been following the on-going soap opera that is NASA and the elections, for once NASA is part of the argument, in a positive way. Both candidates are trying to out-do one another on who will go where and do what.

"... John McCain would “savage” the space program if elected president, Florida Today reported. That’s apparently a reference to McCain’s plans, announced earlier this year, to freeze non-defense discretionary spending for a year, even though the McCain campaign more recently has promised to “commit to funding the NASA Constellation program to ensure it has the resources it needs”. Nelson also took a little credit for the Obama space policy announced earlier this month. I’ve discussed with Barack several nuances and details that he put in his program for space,” Nelson said at a breakfast meeting with organized labor in Denver. “The space program is the symbol of this nation’s technological prowess and Barack understands that, just as John Kennedy understood it.”..."
NASA Watch reports otherwise in a PDF of the letter Senator McCain sent to President Bush, he requested full funding for the shuttle past 2010. From The Write Stuff:"..."We believe it is imperative, as NASA continues the transition from the Space Shuttle to the successor vehicles, that the means for producing additional flight hardware and obtaining additional flight engineering and support services, not be completely and irretrievably lost though destruction or deterioration, at least until a clear path to alternative launch capabilities is in hand," the letter said.
The letter marks a major new initiative on space by the McCain presidential campaign and the Republicans. McCain was just in Florida soliciting advice on the future of the American space program. During the meeting, he was asking for alternatives to relying on Russian Soyuz spacecraft to keep American astronauts in space if the shuttle is mothballed as scheduled in 2010.
The request, if backed by the White House, paves the way for the shuttle to keep flying beyond its scheduled retirement date and would prevent any more contracts from shuttle suppliers, contractors and subcontractors from being turned off. A big round of layoffs is expected in October at NASA's Michoud tank assembly facility in New Orleans. The facility makes the giant orange external fuel tanks, without which the shuttle could not fly...."
