WHY THE GLOVES?
While others are disparately shoveling dirt into sandbags to stave off the ravaging flood waters that are turning Iowa into another of the Great Lakes, Barack Obama made a visit.  He downed some work gloves and started shoveling dirt into sand-bags, yet another photo-op.  Notice the people in front of him - no gloves. Yes, it is petty and tacky, but what the heck.

Seriously, why isn't the flooding in Iowa getting much coverage?  It is one of the most catastrophic floods in American History, but you don't see any news anchors going around crying, "Oh
the humanity."  There's no anchor crying while the University of Iowa goes under, is there?  Photos of the disaster.  And it is a catastrophic disaster.  You need to read TigerHawk, one of the few blogs covering the disaster.  He brings up something I thought about this morning.  This is just as bad as Katrina, but you don’t see all the bellyaching and screaming.  Why?   Look at the photos of Cedar Rapids.   Something like 400 city blocks in Cedar Rapids   have been submerged.   We have no idea what the crop damage is, let alone lives wrecked, homes destroyed, and businesses ruined.
The photos are just plain amazing.

Instead of blaming the feds for the disaster, people are blaming themselves.
“…City officials said it will be at least four days before they can begin pumping out more than 400 flooded blocks downtown. The city's drinking water supply remained in peril. And estimated damages for the city of 120,000 are already above $700 million. An estimated 24,000 Cedar Rapids residents were driven from their homes, including Lisa Armstrong - who wept in a shelter while watching television footage of a boat saving her as the waters flooded her home. "I didn't think it was going to be as bad as it was, and we should have got out when we were told to leave," said Armstrong, one of about 150 evacuees moved to the gym at Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids. downtown Don Webster, in the shelter with his 4-year-old grandson, said he planned to "pray and hope there's something [there] when you go back." The Cedar River crested Friday night at nearly 32 feet, a dozen feet higher than the previous record in 1929. South of the flooded town, the rising Iowa River threatened additional flooding and more water woes in Iowa City. More than 200 homes there were evacuated. A ruptured levee in Des Moines forced the evacuation of 270 homes and damaged 35 businesses in the state capital as the Des Moines River poured into a section of downtown.
The 100-foot breach in the levee quickly surrounded the city's North High School, with water up to 4 feet deep in some areas. Efforts by the National Guard and city work crews to create a temporary wall of dirt and sandbags were abandoned when it became clear it wouldn't hold….”

The levee failed.

FLOODING DOWN RIVER
The towns and cities along the Mississippi are next in the flood’s bull’s eye.  Fortunately Hanni
bal is protected by a levee, but not all communities are.  My sister lives far enough away from the River in Memphis to be safe.  When it floods there, it all goes into Arkansas.

You might want to notice that Barack Obama is using gloves to protect his hands, while those who are fighting to survive are not using them!  Obama's rear can be seen behind the photo of the Amish.   Photos stolen from Yahoo.Downtown Cedar RapidsPhoto stolen from AP
