ARROGANCE 101
I think most of my regular Pink Flamingo readers know I am not much of a friend of “conservative” bloggers, not the ‘top shelf” ones anyway. I find them to be arrogant, hypocritical, anti-Republican, self-serving individuals who are not interested in promoting the Republican Party. While I am conservative, with my values having not changed since the days of Reagan (save for my disapproval of the death penalty because of my very strong pro-life beliefs) I absolutely refuse to be lumped in with these people. I am a Republican. I am a proud Republican. I vote the elephant 99% of the time. I guess I am what you would call a “red cat” Republican. I would say “red dog” but am more a cat person. There is nothing wrong with being a conservative. BUT – I think we need to be able to differentiate between who wish the best for the GOP and those who are in it for a different agenda. The big problem is our most important conservative bloggers are not, from what I can tell Republicans. They are conservatives with agendas of their own. We cannot and should not expect them to express any loyalty for our Republican candidates. The truth be told, we should only expect duplicity from them, as this is their track record.
CONSERVATIVES TURN ON ROMNEY
Do you remember those long gone days of the GOP Primary season when it was a real horserace? Remember how the vast majority of our precious little conservatives were endorsing Mitt Romney. To listen to the likes of Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Rush Limbaugh, etc. you would think that Mitt Romney was the reincarnation of Ronald Reagan. There was then this massive conservative bandwagon effect with the usual source conservatives jumping on.
But now, they’ve turned on him. One of my favorite bloggers, Harold Hutchison is a Romney supporter. As a member of the LDS church, Hutchinson has been rightfully offended these past months at many of the “conservative religious right” attacks on Mitt Romney. While I have problems with Romney, religion was not one of them. On Friday Harold wrote of the duplicity of Paul Weyrich, betraying Romney. On Thursday Harold wrote about James Dobson’s laughable claim that John McCain is dividing the GOP.
I think Harold is being generous with these people and taking them at face value, which one should never do. But then, Harold, like most people who are blogging GOP and conservative are honorable. But - we are also dealing with some very powerful and prestigious conservative blogs and bloggers who wouldn’t know what honor is even when a dictionary is held in front of their noses. I think that’s the problem and the real disconnect. You simply cannot apply honorable intentions to men and women who have none.
Yesterday evening, following my post about our leading, precious little conservative bloggers not coming to the rescue of John McCain, one of the conservative bloggers I very much respect emailed me. He was concerned that I am consider all conservatives one in the same. I don’t. I emailed back that he is an honorable man. He is. Most conservative bloggers are – 95% are good, honorable people. The problem is the fact that the 5% who truly do not like John McCain and maybe would rather not see him succeed are some of the most prestigious of all blogs on the web.
Let's be honest here. The most recent conservative hit on Mitt Romney is not about religion. That's their excuse, which makes the whole process so vile, but they have a different agenda. I think the whole thing is a "Godfather" horse-head moment intended for John McCain. You play ball or else!
We need to recognize that these people are not our allies, our friends, or even trustworthy. They have their own agenda, primarily self promotion. If they happen to get someone elected, great, they will use it for what it is worth. But, if there is a candidate who isn’t going to play ball with them – well, they are going to do their level best to see that that person is not elected.
PROBLEM CONSERVATIVES
For those who think we don’t have a problem with conservatives, I think this comment from Ruffini’s excellent article about Big Mac’s online funding situation is the perfect illustration of the problem we are facing.
“Why would small donor Republicans donate to a candidate who supports open borders and unlimited immigration? Why would they donate to a candidate who has yet to propose a single cut in government spending? Why would they donate to a candidate who supports racial set asides, racial quotas, and racial goals for jobs, education, and contracting? Why would any sane middle class, small amount donor donate to a candiate who appeals to the rich and elite while promoting a host of policies that will make life harder for the middle class?”
Now, do you want to tell me we don’t have a problem with conservatives? THE LIBERAL GROUND GAME
I then found a piece about an alleged conference attended by over 100 top liberal blogs. They think the MSM is not being fair to Obama and are going to do something about it. In the meantime, they’ve broadcast their current ground game.
BOB BARR’S EGO TRIP
I am not sure if Bob Barr’s run for the Libertarian nomination is a disaster for John McCain. I just think it is same old same old for conservatives who hate John McCain. W. James Antle III writes in the Am. Spectator
“…In 2002, Barr lost his congressional seat after redistricting forced him into a primary with fellow Republican Congressman John Linder. After leaving the House, he has focused on civil liberties and privacy protections, opposing the Bush administration on the Patriot Act and its national surveillance program. These issues, along with the explosion in federal spending, drove Bar toward the Libertarian Party and away from the GOP.
Yet he didn't forget his old friends as he made new ones. Barr involved conservative leaders Paul Weyrich and Grover Norquist in his efforts to reform the Patriot Act; he also worked with David Keene and Richard Viguerie to rein in Bush-era expansions of executive power. Civil libertarians valued him as a bridge to the right while his conservative allies regarded him a reminder of when Republicans opposed the Clinton administration's power grabs and activist foreign policy.
Barr can potentially appeal to disgruntled conservatives who see the choice of McCain or the Democrats as analogous to picking between being punched in the stomach or kneed in the groin. This includes both the enthusiastic -- and generous -- grassroots activists who powered libertarian Congressman Ron Paul's GOP presidential campaign and many more conventional Republicans in whom McCain inspires dyspepsia. No less a mainstream conservative than Rush Limbaugh has argued that McCain's election would lead to a revival of Rockefeller Republicanism. To some on the right, that's as bad as extending the Clinton dynasty….”
Yep, all the usual suspects – the Reagan haters. The usual egotistical sore heads are gathering behind Bob Barr, bust-head loser, to go for a libertarian run.
