DOBBS FOR PRESIDENT?

Just when you thought it was safe to turn on the television, we discover Lou Dobbs is on the move. I think we can just about assume he is waiting for the GOP to fall apart and the gods hand him the nomination of some third party on a silver platter.  William Gheene of ALIPAC, drunk on his own importance and power, is raising money to start a third party run.

MY FANTASY:

Let’s have a third party smack-down for the nomination of the Constitution ticket.  We can watch Corsi hammer it out with Alan Keyes, then he is taken out by Lou Dobbs’ hair spray.  Oh the pain! Then Chris Simcox and Jim Gilchrist could go at it in the mud wrestling tank over the VP slot.  Just when all is lost, Ron Paul, with all his millions, and still smarting from the loss of his Congressional seat, will ride in and win the nomination.  The ticket – Ron Paul & Lou Dobbs!

THE LOU DOBBS SMACKDOWN
From Oricus
CNN recently “doctored” a Lou Dobbs transcript where Janet Murguia of La Raza absolutely tore him into many pieces.  If you read the entire transcript, Dobbs appears to be a little befuddled, ignorant, and just plain out of it.
“…Handing White Supremacists a Microphone

The online video has no mention of the way Lou Dobbs has been handing white supremacists a microphone.  To edit out this part of Murguia's conversation with Dobbs is to edit out the most significant indictment of migrant hate.  This is morally corrupt editing decision.  I will be the first to admit that I am afraid to talk about the connections white supremacists have to the anti-migrant movement, and Murguia is a hero for announcing them on national television.  To edit this information out of the online video is morally corrupt.

The first indictment that is edited out is when Murguia mentions the fact that in 2006, Dobbs used the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC) as a source.  One only needs to peruse their website to determine they are white supremacists.  I will not link to their hate but in their mission statement they say they "oppose all efforts to mix the races of mankind".

Murguia is even brave enough to indict the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), the front group for almost every influential anti-migrant group in the country, for its ties to white supremacy.  Here I will quote her:

FAIR has employed members of white supremacists. They promote racist conspiracy theories, and they receive funding from the Pioneer Fund, which is a racist foundation devoted to eugenics and proving a connection between race and IQ.
- CNN Transcript
Again I will not link to their hate.  Is this indictment of FAIR in the online video?  Of course not.

Editing Out Hate Crimes

The next cut of the online video (6:42) eliminates the discussion of the escalation of hate crimes against Latinos in the U.S. since the voices of people like Dobbs and the migrant haters he gives microphones to have gotten louder.  The National Association of Hispanic Journalists blog describes the problem:

“Anti-immigrant hatred heard on the radio and cable shows reaches America’s neighborhoods with real consequences,” stated MALDEF President and General Counsel John Trasviña. “Heightened anti-immigrant sentiment has blocked immigration reform and seeks to turn local police into immigration law enforcers thus making it more difficult for victims to report crimes. The FBI report should serve as a wake up call to our nation’s leaders to take action on comprehensive immigration reform, reduce tensions and safeguard the basic civil rights and liberties of all Americans.”

The report goes on to demonstrate the steady growth of anti-Hispanic hate crimes after 2004.

2006: 576 anti-Hispanic crimes against 819 victims

2005: 522 anti-Hispanic crimes against 722 victims

2004: 475 anti-Hispanic crimes against 646 victims

2003: 426 anti-Hispanic crimes against 595 victims

2002: 480 anti-Hispanic crimes against 639 victims
- NAHJ Blog

Any mention of the rise in Latino hate crimes in the online video? Nope.

Lou Dobbs' Sympathy for Migrants

I went to see Lou Dobbs when he came to Massachusetts, and I was surprised by the mild tone in which he referred to immigration.  Despite his constant anti-migrant maneuvering, I do think pro-migrant advocates should do more to highlight the respect Dobbs actually has for migrants.

That's way Murguia's campaign is so great, it finally put Dobbs on the defensive and forced him to show the humanity of migrants, something that is all to often lost in this debate.  This is just one of the many quotes Dobbs' highlights in an effort to counter Murguia's suggestion that he is handing hate a microphone.

"I think I'm the only one on this panel" -- this is going back to May 15th, 2006 -- "who's actually worked with migrant workers in the fields, with beans, potatoes, hay in my youth. I know them to be good and decent people."
- CNN Transcript

I wish Dobbs said more of this on the air and not in backroom panels.  And one of the few times he does it's edited out of the CNN.com online video.  All we're left with is Lou Dobbs calling Murguia the head of a "socio-ethnocentric interest group"….”

PRESIDENT LOU DOBBS?
Is ALIPAC planning to run Lou Dobbs for POTUS?
“…So far, 2,034 people have pledged $509,825 if Dobbs decides to run, he said. Gheen hopes that the site will generate enough interest to convince Dobbs to enter the 2008 presidential race.
“We want to show Lou that there’s a pre-established base out there that he can use to quickly re-energize the campaign,” Gheen said. Gheen said that if Dobbs decides to run, ALIPAC would give Dobbs the information that the Web site collects.

ALIPAC intends to promote the campaign using the group’s e-mail lists. Gheen said he would also post a letter on the site urging Dobbs to quickly decide whether he will run.
Dobbs—a self-described “independent populist” who has spoken out against illegal immigration and corporate influence in government—sparked rumors last November of a possible run when he predicted that an independent populist would win the presidential election. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal last month, Dobbs said that while he didn’t have the personality to run for office, he “cannot say never.”
According to its Web site, ALIPAC’s mission is to “address the disparity between the public’s desire for more control of illegal immigration and the actions of lawmakers,” saying that 75 percent of Americans “want more done to control illegal immigration.” Stories with headlines like “McCain Madness” or “Outbreak: Leprosy in Arkansas Brought Here by Illegal Aliens,” and a nearly 2,000-word article called “Why the illegals must go” are posted on the site.
ALIPAC has developed a platform for Dobbs, which Gheen said is based on Dobbs’s show, ALIPAC’s understanding of Dobbs’s ideology and polling data. He added that the platforms could change if Dobbs throws his hat into the race….”

Just in case you think the Lou Dobbs strike down above is an anomaly, check with the American Jewish Committee.  They’re a little ticked with him.
