IS THE NM GOP DEAD?
Today there is joy within the bowels of the DNC. They have absolutely destroyed the GOP - House & Senate. It is a triumph of the Democratic Spirit!
Yea, right.
It's more like the triumph of a patently obvious fraudulent voting registration and identification system.
It is the triumph of an absolutely corrupt Democratic machine.
It is the "triumph" of a completely incompetent state Republican party.
And - it is the "triumph" of a vote count system so corrupt it is almost laughable.
Let's start with the most pressing item - the way the preliminary "final" count was done - at the home office of a private contractor who has done this for years, they say! When one considers the fact that New Mexico is one of those don't ask don't tell states where a person is only required to give "voice" verification of registration, and we have one beautiful set up for vote fraud.
I was a bit concerned about the 2nd Congressional District where I live. Democrat Harry Teague handily defeated Republican Ed Tinsley. I started crunching numbers and basically discovered that this may have been yet another case of a bad candidate going down to defeat. Tinsley is okay, but he's more a perennial also ran. Teague ran a positively nasty campaign, but came out on top. The vote spread wasn't all that different from a "regular" election year.
Heather Wilson was bound to lose the 3rd Congressional District this year. She's only been able to hold on to that district by a finger-nail. In the current climate she would have gone down.
If you want to cast blame somewhere, do it directly at the feet of Steve Pearce. Pearce had no business dumping his 2nd District seat so he could run for Senate. He barely defeated Wilson in the primary. The problem there was the fact that the GOP in NM is far more conservative than the rest of the state. If Wilson had been the nominee, I think she would have defeated Tom Udall. Pearce would have been able to hang on to his job. I am fairly certain the election of Teague over Tinsley was more a personality thing than anything else. After crunching his numbers, he just plain old went down, hard.
It would be polite to pass this off as "coat-tails" for the messiah-elect, but I just am not seeing it. I'm not seeing all that much vote fraud. From what I know visiting with my Democratic friends, they would have rather voted for Wilson than Udall.
So, we are forced to go back to the fact that the GOP in New Mexico is basically incompetent. At the time Pearce was running in the primary, I told my Democratic friend that someone in the GOP needed to read him the riot act and explain he needed to remain exactly where he was.
Once again we are faced with what seems to be the downfall of the Republican Party. The local GOP - state wide - through-out the country is far more conservative than the actual Republican voter. You get a half dozen candidates all trying to out conservative the other, and the weaker candidate ends up winning the primary over the more electable less conservative candidate. It is the current recipe for political disaster.
Unless the GOP learns how to find ELECTABLE candidates, we're going to remain a minority party - forever. We can't count on the messiah-elect being a disaster. We can't count on people begging for conservative rule. The only way to get the GOP out of this current losing streak is to start vetting candidates, and going with the most electable, even if they aren't the most conservative.
