MICHAEL CRICHTON
My family has a Celtic view of death. It comes in threes. Tony Hillerman died last week. Michael Crichton lost his battle with cancer today. In the next few weeks we will lose another great writer.
Michael Crichton just died. I guess my mother can't go around insulting him now - long story. It was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life.
After the opening of The Lost World, (we were in Memphis), my sister's family, her best friend's ex-family and my mother and I were standing around the lobby (very nice theater) discussing the film. We all ended up sitting on the front row and were still getting the T-Rex gore off our faces. No one liked the movie.
This man comes up and asks how we liked the movie. My mother, sister, and her best friend unloaded. I tried to calm them down, but they ignored me. I kept kicking my sister's ankle. She glared at me and ignored me.
I say, "I wish they had used the book instead of going off into something completely different. The book was great." I received an appreciative thank you.
Dejected, the man walks off. I glare at everyone. "Don't you know that was Michael Crichton" I get this ignorant 'who's that' and gave up on them. In the car I explained to my mother and sister that they had just insulted one of the great writers of the latter half of the 20th Century. They could have cared less.
This past week I have lost two of my favorite writers. This hurts.
If you've not read Jurassic Park, I suggest you do so. The books is much better than the movie, which was incredible.
Dime con quien andas y te digo quien eres.
