JUST LET McCAIN BE McCAIN
Bill Krystal's column is begging John McCain to fire his campaign staff. For months I've been hearing rumors about said staff. There has been much grumbling about the way they are handling their candidate, and have cut off press access. The way they've handled Sarah Palin is an abject disgrace. This said, there is no possible way at this late date that anything can be cone about the campaign staff. John McCain just needs to show them who is the boss, before it is too late.
There are some conservatives who want John McCain to "take the gloves off" and fight Barack Obama like there is no tomorrow. There are some conservatives who are furious that he isn't going after Obama with something akin to saturation bombing. Let's be honest here. These are the johnny come lately conservatives who are only supporting McCain becasue he chose Sarah Palin for VP. Then there are the non-Republican conservatives who pretend to be Republican to make as much trouble as possible. They don't even like Palin. These are the conservatives who don't want a Republican to win under any circumstances. As usual, they are making as much mischief as possible.
The johnny come lately conservatives who are supporting John McCain becasue of Sarah Palin, don't understand him. Because they aren't 'students' or fans of John McCain they neither understand nor appreciate the honor of the man. They don't realize that John McCain is behaving like John McCain. There are no excuses. There is nothing hidden below the surface. There is only the honor of John McCain. Those who cannot appreciate the fact that McCain would rather lose with honor than be victorious with dishonor, don't understand the very nature of the man.
This is the real John McCain. He will never back down from a fight. He has always fought with honor. If you don't realize this, go back and look at his time as a POW in North Vietnam. The honor he displayed as a tortured prisoner of war is the same honor that will not allow dishonorable attacks on Barack Obama. It's that simple. He has displayed this honor all of his life. Why stop and compromise now?
I find most fascinating and very interesting that he and Sarah Palin are literally butting heads over the tactics to use on Barack Obama. The most telling aspect of all of this is the fact that he will allow Palin to argue with him. It also tells us that McCain appreciates her openness.
Sarah Palin is fighting like a woman. John McCain is using the Marquis of Kingsbury rules of an officer and a gentleman. (I think this is the right time to cue the sound track from The Quiet Man and the bout of fisticuffs at the end of the film). We are dealing with a frustrating, pig-headed man of honor. That's why I so strongly support him.
Unfortunately we women don't have the option of fighting that way. We basically have three options available to us - three recourses for fighting.
1. Like Hillary Clinton we an use tears as a weapon. It is a tried way to completely disarm an enemy, make friends, and influence people. There is nothing dishonorable about this method. It has been used by women since the beginning of time. If a man tries it, he's toast.
2. When cornered by a vicious male who is more like a rabid animal than a human there is only one way to go. You hit him fast, hard, and true - right where it hurts...in the portion of the anatomy that oftimes passes for the male brain. While he is bent over in pain, you hit him over the head with a baseball bat, frying pan, anything you can get your hands on. Then, you deliver a knock-out blow, scream and run like heck.
3. You get even like the story about the soon to be ex-wife who was loved far less than her hubby's wine cellar. Instead of draining the wine, she distributed it around the neighborhood with a nice little note asking people to consume it immeidately then return the empty bottle to the ex's new address. I keep waiting for Hillary Clinton to do this to Barack Obama. It is coming, trust me.
There are some conservatives, though, who either fight like a bunch of sissies or some tacky wrestler on a Mexican television channel. They break a nail and run screaming for their mommy. They have no honor.
Just sit back and let John McCain be John McCain. A year ago he was political mince-meat. Like Jacob Marley, he was politically dead as a door-nail. He is at his very best when cornered and when he is the under-dog. I don't think he knows how to fight any other way. I still believe he is going to win.
Several days ago Michael Medved said that he did not think going after Bill Ayers was a winning tactic. At the time I thought he was wrong, but I'm coming to believe he was correct. The best tactic is to take Obama out over ACORN and his Fannie & Freddie connections. He is extremely vulnerable on all three topics.
The American people don't like to be cheated. They don't like cheaters. They like nothing better than to cheat a cheater. If we continue to hit Obama on the fact that he is a cheater, we can't lose. We need to hit Obama with ACORN. We need to hit him hard, you know where. Watch him run crying for "mommy" Oprah.
Just remember the words of the great American philosopher. "It ain't over 'till it's over."
