HARDBALL, SC STYLE
FTS News has been following the seemingly sordid story of one of South Carolina's legendary read infamous - political consultants and a fascinating little expose the other day. The PBS version of the story appeared last night. It is about 30 minutes long, but very much worth the time, if you want to know what makes South Carolina tick, and preview what may be coming to an inbox near you, very shortly. Novak says the Romney campaign was being the Thompson rumor, trying to blame it on McCain. The Palmetto Scoop
“…By keeping Tompkins on his payroll for the final weeks of this state’s primary, especially after such a slam-dunk admission of guilt by someone directly involved, Romney is essentially saying that he’s fine with the unconscionable style of campaign filth peddled during the 2000 election. Worse than that, his failure to disassociate with Tompkins’ firm — which has already been busted for anonymously smearing rival Fred Thompson — could be a warning that we can expect similar or possibly worse attacks in the final days of the primary election….”
According to The Palmetto Scoop, SC voters are taking shelter from the war of words that is about to descend upon the state.
Brad Warthen is calling for Thompson to bow out and give his support to McCain.
“…I've wondered all year why in the world Mr. Thompson even thought of running. As I said back in this column, he forgot to do one thing when he jumped in late: Tell us what it was he brought to the campaign that the candidates already running did not already offer. Now, it's my turn to return the favor and tell Fred Thompson something that he should already know: It's time for him to do the principled thing again, and assert what he knew to be true back then: He should bow out, and support McCain. And he should do it now; now is when he can make a difference….”

Best debate yet. On the Republican side, Romney was dominant but got hit with a lot of cheap personal shots. McCain was not likable. Giuliani was good but didn’t engage in the debate. Huckabee lost his usual aw-shucks charm. Paul is a Libertarian...
