A RECIPE FOR DISASTER
WPost “…From Rush Limbaugh to Tom DeLay, voices that once held sway over the Republican rank and file unloaded on John McCain over the last week, trying to use a conservative electorate in South Carolina to derail the Arizona senator's quest for the Republican nomination.
But though McCain failed to persuade many of the old Republican power brokers, he wrapped up the Republican establishment where it counted most, South Carolina. His win Saturday underscored how different McCain's campaign has been this year compared with eight years ago, when a similar conservative assault effectively ended his campaign here and handed his party's presidential nomination to George W. Bush....Limbaugh led the way with a verbal blitz, not just against McCain but against his closest rival in South Carolina, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee...."I'm here to tell you, if either of these two guys get the nomination, it's going to destroy the Republican Party. It's going to change it forever, be the end of it," Limbaugh fumed on his radio show Tuesday. .... "McCain has done more to hurt the Republican Party than any elected official I know of," said DeLay, the former House majority leader, who was personally damaged by McCain's Senate probe of lobbyist Jack Abramoff, a probe that implicated numerous DeLay associates....
The problems facing the GOP have nothing to do with being dispirited over George W. Bush, but over the MADD (Mutually Assured Destruction) tactics that nativist anti-immigration reform conservatives have adapted. Their scorched earth policy which dictates that anyone who dares to disagree with the various anti-immigration organizations such as Numbers USA, FAIR, etc. and their talking points, must be totally and completely destroyed. John McCain’s victory last night over the forces of the out of control conservative multi-millionaire talk show pundits and their sycophant columnists is perhaps a light shining in the darkness of the irrational hate and impending doom. Perhaps we will be able to over-come the devastation brought upon the GOP in November of 2006 when “Non” Republican Conservatives manipulated their ire into the GOP losing control of the House and Senate. I have no doubt this is their agenda for 2008 if they are not allowed to have their choice of candidate thrust upon the American people. We all know if the GOP continues down the path set out for it in the talking points of our multi-million dollar talking heads by John Tanton, Sun Myung Moon and their minions, it is doomed.
Today Fr. Penn spoke about the various sects that evolved from the early church. When he talked about the Gnostics, he asked, “How would it feel to belong to a religion where the leader is a liar?”
I think this is a perfect analogy for what is going on with our multi-million dollar talk show hosts today. They are being spoon-fed lies and must go to desperate lengths to defend their new false god of hate. To me the most disturbing development is the fact that some conservatives are willing to accept the fact that in order to promote their ideology of anti-immigration they must make a deal with the devil.
Part of the problem is certain individuals have turned the word “liberal” into the 2nd nastiest word in the English language. Anything “liberal” is evil. Any source that is “liberal” is evil. Any writer who is “liberal” is evil. Any politician who is “liberal” is evil. The alleged 30% of the GOP who is far far far right lemming conservative (and I think it is less than 30%) has been brainwashed to think that anything “liberal” = evil. I think our celeb conservatives and talk show hosts have done a tremendous dis-service to their lemming followers by tarring with distain anything “liberal”.
If a Republican candidate possesses the ability to appeal to a general variety of people then they are hitting that beautiful Reagan sweet spot on the bat. That sweet-spot, those “moderate” Republicans, who were once considered Reagan Republicans but have now been castigated with the “Moderate” epitaph. They are evil because they possess the ability to reason and not to march lock-step into the morass with those who are now propelling conservatives onward, over a cliff.
I think it’s time we “normal” Republicans, who have opinions that differ from the talking elites to stand up and tell them we have had enough. We aren’t lemmings who are going to follow them over the cliff of loss and oblivion. We want to win. We are desperately interested in the future of this nation. The greatest irony of all is these conservatives, who have made Ronald Reagan into a false god, have forgotten that Reagan knew how to reach out to everyone in this country – how to appeal to the vast, forgotten majority of Americans who were moderately conservative in their lives and actions, and vastly fair and balanced.
Fr. Penn had a wonderful sermon today. When he finally completed his history lesson, he started discussing a few of the disciples. The Gospel today was John 1:29-41, concluding with the calling of the first disciples. He told how Simon Peter was the most tempestuous and intemperate of all the disciples, the lest likely to succeed. “Upon this rock”. Christ built his church upon Simon Peter – The Rock.
Today our celeb multi-millionaire talk show conservatives and their lemmings are looking for just the perfect “Reagan” conservative. I think the most tragic aspect of these people today is the complete surrender of wisdom and perspective. If they were capable of introspection and pragmatic insight they would understand that the “perfect” choice is often the wrong choice and the “wrong” choice is often the person perfect for the job.
