I’M VOTING THE ELEPHANT

I’ve been castigating Lemming Conservatives for weeks, furious with them over the way they are acting.  This morning I have been doing my usual scan of the news, headlines, and trends, when something occurred to me.  First, this battle between Hillary and Barry is absolutely hilarious.  We’re dealing with two liberals who are now reaping the rewards of good intentions and political correctness.  They are killing one another with it and I can’t think of two more appropriate targets and recipients.

They are inflicting far more damage on one another than any Republican ever could.  With any luck they are going to end up like the two characters Frank Gorshin played in the Star Trek (classic) Let This Be Your Last Battlefield.   The same thing holds true with today’s multi-million dollar ratio talk show conservatives.  They are conflicting more damage on our candidates than the Democrats ever could.

I simply cannot get over the mentality and the sentiment expressed by John Hawkins in Townhall.
“…Now, am I saying that Republicans should vote for a third party or stay home if John McCain is the nominee? Absolutely not. I don't believe in protest votes and besides, the presidency is bigger than any one issue. Still, when you set up a situation where people on your own side are perversely incentivized to sabotage the candidacy of your party's President over the biggest domestic issue of last year, you're not just asking for trouble, you're begging for it.

What kind of trouble? Millions and millions of Republicans staying home, conservatives putting equal priority on fighting the Democrats and fighting against the ideas of their own candidate for the presidency, a third party effort, fund raising for Republican candidates dropping even lower than the anemic level it's already at and perhaps losing an extra 2-3 Senate seats and another 5-10 House seats -- or perhaps not….”

I know Hawkins is simply expressing the sentiment he hears from the multi-million dollar conservative talk show host abject hatred of John McCain. He is also a picture perfect example of how not to win, how we lost the majority, and how we are going to be consigned to minority status, and the loss of the Supreme Court.  The problem we’re dealing with is the fact that today’s Lemming Conservative is an ideologue.  They want a candidate who is ideologically pure, and defame anyone who isn’t.  The problem is that is not REPUBLICAN.  While it may be pure conservative, it is not Ronald Reagan’s Republican where anyone who votes GOP 80% of the time is all right with him.

If conservatives worship Reagan, why aren’t they following his rules?  It is a question I would to love to ask to Mark Levin, who thinks he is All That when it comes to Reagan and the Constitution. You would think someone who has been around the block a few times like Levin would no longer be an idealist, but a realist.  But I think that is the problem with today’s Lemming Conservative.  They have become such ideologues that they are losing touch with reality.  This happens to ideologues.  When it does, they enter the danger zone in my way of thinking.  Then we get the French Revolution, Marx having Nicholas, Alexandria, and the kids murdered, and Mao cleaning up China’s culture.  Do the same people who worship Reagan realize they are becoming what they hate most?

Mark Levin’s recent NRO attack piece on McCain is a perfect example of this. We also discover from the front page of Townhall that Hawkins piece is one of the most linked of the day.  No wonder.  All the little Lemming Conservatives are latching on to it as they grasp any life preserver on their way over the cliff with the multi- millionaires.

I mention McCain simply because the conservative guns are after him they way they were after Mike Huckabee a few weeks ago.  Save the GOP has a piece about Mike Huckabee being 527ed in South Carolina.  It is followed by some very nasty comments about Huckabee. In fact, Jay Cost of Horse Race Blog has the most logical commentary on the problems conservatives and the GOP nominee faces than just about any thing I’ve seen lately.
“…McCain's problem has more to do with conservative leaders than the rank and file. You probably have picked up on this impressionistically. National Review endorsed Romney. Rush Limbaugh has been openly critical of McCain's candidacy. Human Events is no longer the significant intellectual force it was three decades ago - but I thought it was telling that it endorsed Thompson after McCain won New Hampshire….Huckabee is even more unacceptable to conservative leaders (he has the endorsement of only three out-of-state Republican members of Congress). His campaign even seems to be courting their contempt. McCain, to his credit, has worked hard since the immigration bill not to thumb his nose at conservative leaders. But not Huckabee. And I think that they would only accept Huckabee's nomination after he has won a majority of delegates. Until then, they'll find somebody, anybody to oppose him.”

Today’s celebrity, multi-million dollar radio talk show conservative is so out of touch with the main-stream rank and file REPUBLICAN voter it is pathetic.  It should also render them impotent when it comes to the topic of influencing the primary vote.  Either these people have the guts to come out and support a candidate like the rest of us who are NORMAL (I use that word loosely) do, or else they should shut up until the process is over.

Jay Cost hit on something which is born out in this Politico piece about a voter in SC agonizing over her choice between McCain and Huckabee.  Conservative ranking has nothing to do with the vote.  The talk show hosts have nothing to do with it.  It is all a matter of perception. They need to get a grip.  To paraphrase Rick Blaine (and if you don’t know who he is, you are a cultural idiot) the problems of two little people in this world don’t amount to a hill of beans.  Or, the egos of a few little conservatives in this world don’t amount to a hill of beans.

What is important is for REPUBLICANS to band together once this absolutely fascinating election season is over.  I will admit to doing my share of hits on more than a few of our GOP candidates.  But I am bright enough to know now that we are getting down to the bottom line, we cut the rhetoric back just a bit and start looking to the future.  I want to keep the White House.  I want to regain control of the House and the Senate.  I want our Republicans to win.  I don’t give a rip if they are liberal, moderate, or conservative – as long as they are Republican.

I am not an ideologue.  That’s how you lose elections.  Conservatives proved how short-sighted and outright foolish they were in the great election debacle of 2006.  I am terrified they are going to repeat the mistakes of the past.  I have this terrible feeling conservatives would rather lose everything, including the possibility of putting decent judges on the Supreme Court, just to prove they are RIGHT and that’s just plain WRONG.

There is nothing wrong with being idealistic.  I was that way once upon a time, when I was a school girl working with Lee Atwater on the Nixon campaign in South Carolina.  But I grew up, psychologically, and realize that ideology just doesn’t work.  It’s for children and the naïf.  Somehow I don’t think our multi-millionaire talk show celeb conservatives are naïf.  To me that reeks of manipulation.  No, it isn’t shame on them, well maybe it is.  It’s mostly shame on the Lemming Conservatives who, like children, believe everything they are told.

The bottom line is the fact that I VOTE THE ELEPHANT.  I am going to vote for the Republican nominee no matter if it is Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, John McCain, or Mitt Romney.  (Face it, Thompson is going to be out of it soon).  I would rather have either Giuliani or McCain and my dream team would be a McCain-Giuliani ticket, thus dooming the Democrats to what could be another 12 to 16 years of a GOP White House.  But, I am going to vote for who ever wins the GOP nomination.  I will support them and do what I can to help them be elected.
