The Pink Flamingo :: (Or) Can Any Agenda Based Source be Trusted?

This is one of the messiest posts I’ve done in ages. There is a method in the mess. A few days ago Investors Business Daily did a piece about George Soros. Highly respected blogs like Powerline wrote about Soros being a threat to democracy. Since then the conservative blog world has been atwitter denouncing all the various liberal connections to Soros. I think he is a very bad person. BUT, I also think that Sun Myung Moon, who owns the Washington Times, among other conservative sources is just as dangerous. Moon has poured upward of THREE BILLION DOLLARS into various conservative causes over the years, but you never see conservative bloggers do an expose on Moon, who I feel is just as dangerous as Soros.

Why?

Have conservatives sold their soul to Sun Myung Moon the same way liberals have sold theirs to George Soros? If you ask me it’s six of one and a half dozen of another. There’s no difference. They both play to the worst ‘angels’ in all of us.

A MINI RANT
If you want my personal opinion, the only reason MoveOn.Org exists, the only reason George Soros is so instrumental in liberal politics today is to counter Sun Myung Moon. If conservatives had not sold their “Christian” souls to a cult leader who thinks he is the incarnation of Christ on Earth, we might not be dealing with this mess right now. BUT – conservatives never bother checking the sources. I don’t want to say they were ‘asking for it’ but it sure looks that way to me.

THE MEDIA WATCHERS
There is this huge ‘war’ going on between Bill O’Reilly and Media Matters.   Stating the obvious is that Media Matters is a George Soros front. We all know that. The fact is, Media Matters has just as much of a right to exist as does Media Research Center, it’s conservative counterpart. To me the problem is the fact that we don’t have a rational source watch that is half-way in between. If you look at the front pages of both sites, you have complete opposites. As a Republican and someone who was once considered conservative even though my values haven’t changed, I think we need both. Fact is, I rarely if ever Check out the Brent Bozell site, but frequent Media Matters.

Why?

What conservatives don’t understand is the fact (and this is probably where I am antiquated) is the fact that once we stood allegedly stood for factual accuracy, or at least I thought we did. If something a conservative writes or says can pass the liberal smell test, then you have something. The problem is today’s conservative writing and punditry can rarely pass the small test. The same thing holds true for liberals. There is so much hate in the world that we’re dealing with a war of mutual assured destruction. Neither side is going to stop until the other has been destroyed.

It reminds me of the Star Trek (classic) episode, Let This Be Your Last Battlefield. Neither side would stop until everyone had been destroyed.

Where Bozell and his bunch lose me is when I find a link to Chuck Baldwin as part of his acceptable media sources.If anyone is in-accurate, and promoting misconceptions and lies it is Chuck Baldwin. Consequently, I have very little trust in the conservative source.   I know Media Matter is biased. But, do you realize so is the MEDIA RESEARCH CENTER?

I also like Media Transparency, which follows the money behind the conservative media. The truth hurts.

ORGANIZATIONS
David Horowitz has Discover the Networks. I rarely use it because I know the Left is biased.
BUT – under “Immigration” I checked to see what was there. David Horowitz is sourcing Peter Brimelow of Vdare, Frosty Woodbridge, and Sam Francis. Sorry, but knowing what I know of these sources, I can’t trust a single source or thing David Horowitz has on his site. When you lie down with racists, you can’t be trusted. Every source he now has is no longer acceptable. I like the liberal Source Watch.   Once again, if a conservative can pass the ‘smell test’ then run with it. Then look at Source Watch, which deals with both liberals and conservatives who are dealing with immigration.

LIBERALS
Oricus is very hard on conservatives. That’s okay, they are also honest. It is one of my TRUSTED LIBERAL sites. Max Blumenthal is a liberal who is hard-hitting but seems to be accurate. His expose of the Washington Times has yet to be debunked. He is also a writer for Media Matters. Does that disqualify him as a writer, only someone who is ideologically blind would think so. For those who think the Right has no agenda and does not push an issue front and center, Blumenthal wrote a very disturbing expose for The Nation. Attorneys for the WTimes have yet to demand a retraction.

“…Coombs believes immigration is "the number-one issue in America today," and he has played an instrumental role in pressing far-right positions into the mainstream. In a move that many sources considered emblematic, on August 22 Coombs splashed a favorable review of Pat Buchanan's book State of Emergency across the paper's front page. Buchanan's book is a diatribe calling for an immediate moratorium on all immigration, to stave off the demise of Western civilization. "There were a lot of other things going on [in the news] that day," a Times senior staffer said. "Any other paper would have reserved that for the book review section, but Coombs had to have Buchanan on the front page." Coombs, the staffer continued, "will literally stand there and scan websites and look for anything that's anti-Hispanic, that's immigrant-bashing, and he will order the editors to go with it." According to Archibald, in 2001 Pruden issued a memo instructing reporters to stop using the term "illegal immigrant" and instead use "illegal alien"--a lead the rest of the conservative media soon followed.

Coombs oversaw the Times's coverage of the anti-immigrant Minutemen patrols along the US/Mexico border in 2005. A 2006 report by the ACLU, "Creating the Minutemen," singled out the Times for inflating the number of volunteers and overlooking the involvement of white supremacists in the Minutemen ranks. The Times correspondent tasked by Coombs with reporting on the patrols, Jerry Seper, was subsequently honored by an anti-immigration think tank, the Center for Immigration Studies, for his "dogged, committed" coverage. (Seper, for his part, is an ex-cop whose anti-immigration leanings are driven more by his close relationship with Border Patrol agents than by nativist ideology. He is described by a Times senior staffer as "disgusted" at Coombs's views on race and has been posited as a potential successor to Coombs as managing editor.)

In an interview, Coombs spoke proudly of his influence on the immigration debate. "Every article used to be about how the government abuses immigrants," Coombs told me. "Not one showed the negative impact of immigration. I don't want to suggest we led the way, but we were the first or one of the first to discuss immigration not from some feel-good perspective."…”

ADL – Anti Defamation League is one of the best sites to check up on sources, liberal or conservative.

SPLC – Southern Poverty Law Center – In my way of thinking, this is THE VERY BEST liberal site there is. There are a number of conservatives who hate it, probably because Morris Dees is a money making machine. They try to debunk it, but the only ‘dirt’ that ever surfaces is Dees’ admittedly messy personal life.

The SPLC runs “Hatewatch” . Ironically, if you hit the url for it today, you come up with the headline, “As Criticism Mounts, Washington Times Losing Key Staffers” If you are still sitting on the fence about the WTimes (I’ve not even mentioned the Sun Myung Moon ownership) try this.

First, Stacy McCain is a pretty good friend of mine, Francis Coombs is a big fan of our website, and I've had lunch with his wife at an American Renaissance conference. Stacy, at least, is not anti-Jewish -- they all come from that weird part of the "far right" that buys into race theories but has a weird admiration for Semites. I once suggested to Mrs Coombs that the Washington Times should more virulently criticize the Zionist Entity, and she told me that several Jewish columnists -- Charles Krauthammer, Norman Podhoretz and AM Rosenthal, among others -- had threatened the Moonie organization if they ever took an anti-Zionist stance. Wes Pruden, who is in charge of the Times, however, is an extreme Zionist, and I have cussed him out violently for his extreme pro-Jewish views. People who know him tell me they can't understand his love of the Zionist state.

In any case, the SPLC has been trying to get these guys fired for years now. Stacy, in paticular, wrote a front-page story exposing how the SPLC made up the Y2K militia threat in order to con a multi-million contract out of the Clinton government, and has been on their shit list every since.
