They finally get a “funnel” cloud in Ruidoso Downs – and I miss it!
By now you’ve realized I ‘sorta’ lost it when it came to The Asterisk. Blame it on the humidity, lack of steroids on my part. I am once again going to try tweaking the format of the blog. I’m wondering if it wouldn’t be better to do a few separate topics, primarily because I can indulge myself in flights of tagline fancy.
The Gods of Baseball are beautiful, exquisite fickle creatures with a magnificent sense of whimsy. That whimsy was in full play last night when a New York Mets fan caught The Asterisk’s “record breaking” home run ball. I am hoping it is a sign of things to come, in that by Christmas Bonds is going to be history, literally.
As soon as I have time to do the download, I have photos of my pilgrimage today.
MY RANT OF THE DAY
I guess it does pay to cheat. Evidently it pays to be a jerk. Nice guys finish last. What a wonderful lesson for the youth of today. The best way to get ahead and become rich and famous is to allegedly take performance enhancing pharmaceutical concoctions. The Asterisk* is probably the best commentary on our society today we could wish to find. The end justifies the means. Honor is nothing. Decency is nothing. Who cares? Once upon a time when the 2nd greatest hitter to ever play the game was banned for life for taking money from gamblers, Major League Baseball had a code of honor. Today, who even gives a *$&$@$$$$$$$$$$$$. It is all about the blessed dollar, bless be the almighty dollar.
Yes, I’ve shed a tear for the game I love so dearly. $$$$$$$$$$$$ and the quest for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ has nearly destroyed it. Will it ever be possible to regain its innocence and honor? The innocence is lost. But, it is still possible to regain its honor. Bud Selig knows what me must do.
BARRY BONDS MUST BE BANNED FOR LIFE
I know it is a little extreme, but this man has done more to harm the image of the game than anything, than anyone, ever. Once upon a time the credo was “For the Good of the Game”. Too bad we can’t go back to that again. Like Murph says, he has set a terrible example for the kids.
The did you see the way that arrogant you know what acted when he hit it? Hank Aaron was humble, decent, honorable – and THE HOME RUN KING. Barry Bonds will never be anything other than an asterisk.
“…"Barry's a great player, there's no question about it, but he put an asterisk by his name on his own," Murphy said Monday on AM radio 1280 The Show. "He's deserved all the negative publicity that he's getting. I mean, people are calling up and complaining, I've heard the last few weeks, that that he's being treated unfairly. You know, life just usually isn't like that. You don't usually get treated unfairly. You usually get what you deserve. This is what Barry deserves. He's a hard guy to like. He's a hard teammate to have and, you know, he's set a terrible example for our kids…Even in a court of law you can have ... a preponderance of circumstantial evidence to convict somebody," Murphy said. "Now, maybe I'm wrong, but when you get enough stuff on a guy, you can make a decision and it's just really a no-brainer. The guy would have become one of the great ones, anyway. ... But now, he sucked the fun and the life right out of it. I mean, there is enough evidence to me to say without a doubt he used performance-enhancing drugs. He hit 73 home runs when he was 37. I mean, Hank would have hit 855 if he had the same advantage."
Dale Murphy, an honorable guy if there ever was one! *cheated to achieve record
Captain Ed has a somewhat different take. I disagree with him. He does, though, point out the Class Act that is Hammerin’ Hank Aaron, the true Homerun King. Captain Ed mentions what Ford Frick did to Roger Maris with an “asterisk”. Over the years there has been quite a bit of discussion as to reasons Maris has never been admitted to the HOF. Quite honestly aside from two very good years, 1960 & 1961, I don’t think he merits admission. Contrast that with Mark McGuire’s lifetime in baseball. There is a huge difference. The problem for McGuire is the fact that he is never going to make it into the HOF, either because of the allegations of steroid use.
Now, take a look at Dale Murphy’s lifetime stats. One wonders what might have happened if he’d been juiced. But, one also wonders what might have happened if he’d not had several bad years in Atlanta during their bad years. You also wonder about his strike-outs. But – all in all – Murph deserves to be I the HOF.
MY MINI RANT
Perhaps the best way to police this whole steroid mess is to completely bar these guys from the Hall of Fame. They do not deserve it. As long as the HOF remains “pure” and uncorrupted by money, maybe that may happen. My one solace in all of this is the fact that Barry Bonds will never darken its doors. The next question is as follows: If Barry Bonds is convicted of perjury and money laundering and goes to jail, do the powers that be strip him of his records the way they did Shoeless Joe, who did not deserve his fate. Bonds deserves this fate worse than death.
Why?
Barry Bonds, if found guilty (and he is innocent until proven guilty) of perjury, money laundering, and use of steroids must be ousted from the game – banned. This is a way for baseball to regain its moral high ground.
It just makes sense that Nancy Pelosi applauds The Asterisk
Speaking of moral high ground – does Romney have any left at all after his commentary about his sons, Iowa, and Iraq?
Harold Hutchinson on what happens when BP Agents go bad, sometimes people die. Funny how we’re hearing nothing about this one on “conservative” sites. Or how about an immigration official found guilty of assaulting a woman?
