Harry Reid Surrenders to President Bush!

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid

Just because the White House isn’t going to gloat about the Dem surrender,  Tony Snow never said I couldn’t.

NO MISS PIGGY NEWS

I have had a long day.  I did not sleep well last night, worrying about Miss Piggy.  I just don’t know what’s up with her.  I don’t think is feline leukemia, but Dr. Franklin knows more than I do.  I’ve heard nothing this evening.  I just don’t know. Doc is acting the way she does when a member of the family dies, so that is what really bothers me.

I’ve been rather miserable mood today.  Just looking at the newly published Reagan Diaries, I started thinking of my grandfather and Father’s Day.  He would have loved to have had a copy of it.  He was such a Ronald Reagan fan.  I guess I thought I always had a little part of my grandfather left until Ronald Reagan died.  My grandparents were such huge fans of his.  I think the tears shed during Reagan’s funeral were more for my grandparents than Reagan.  Something else I hope is that the real conservative principals of Reagan will shine through and those who take his name in vein will be shamed.

MUST READ: Warner Todd Houston has an absolutely refreshing moderately liberal conservative take on the crybaby cut and run conservatives – from a stand and fight conservative point of view.      Frankly I am shocked, shocked I say, to find logic going on here!

MUST READ: I reiterate that I am not an environmental person, but I think this cautionary tale should be read.  “…Except for the small amount that’s been incinerated—and it’s a very small amount—every bit of plastic ever made still exists…”

IMMIGRATION

Late yesterday evening my inbox was hit with about a dozen email from the same source, using different non-profits, misc.

organizations to promote the anti-immigration stance.  It is quite fascinating, well orchestrated, and well planned.  The ones that did not lead to a URL, I did a copy and past and have posted them over at The Subway Canaries.

Debunking the lies of the anti-immigrant supporters.  Last year the SPLC issued a report debunking the far right’s allegations against the McCain-Kennedy Bill.  The bill has changed, but the facts and the lies haven’t.

I am glad to see that Kevin Bishop, Lindsey’s communication director is fighting back and fighting mad over all the lies that are being told about this immigration bill. And more from Lindsey’s site. hJim DeMint is on Lindsey’s case over the bill, prompted by the fact that he is being targeted by the ultra conservative anti-immigration foesDeMint is on every hit list these people have as a legislator to be pressured.  Then over the weekend, DeMint did what could be described as nothing but grandstanding, and pandering for Romney  The best part about all of this is the fact that it leads into a beautiful Mitt-Flop.

“…DeMint upped the ante in his tussle with Graham with another broadside Friday. “As we understand it, this plan will grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants by allowing them to permanently stay here without ever having to return to their home countries,” DeMint said in a statement. DeMint appeared to be referring to a new Z visa that illegal immigrants would be able to obtain every four years.

Graham and his aides, though, said such immigrants would have to navigate a maze of requirements before being able to apply for a Z visa. They would first get a probationary visa, pay a $1,000 fine, pass a background check, remain employed and maintain a clean criminal record.

And the federal government would issue no Z visas, Graham said, unless it first met benchmarks for border security and employers’ verification of workplace identifications.

Immigrants who want a green card and a path toward citizenship, Graham said, would have to leave the United States and apply for it from abroad.

DeMint’s amnesty claim obviously hit a raw nerve with Graham. In a barb that appeared to be aimed straight at DeMint, Graham said: “Before you inflame the public by using buzz words, let’s look and see what we did.”

Graham added: “I look forward to working with Jim and explaining to him the way the agreement works.”

Graham was among a core group of six senators who met into the night for weeks with Bush Cabinet members to hash out the immigration deal.

“Amnesty in the dictionary is a forgiveness and a pardon,” Graham said. “This bill has a probationary sentence applied to those who come forward and say they’re here illegally. I don’t agree that this is amnesty under any reasonable definition of the law — and I happen to be a lawyer.”

Tony Fratto, a White House aide, said Bush’s weekly radio address today would be devoted to the immigration plan. He said Bush would lobby lawmakers to support it.

“The president is personally very committed to this issue,” Fratto said.

Graham said the immigration package “is not perfect,” but he expressed pride in the accord and said reaching it required compromise on all sides.

“I just really do believe this is the last, best chance probably for decades to fix immigration,” Graham said. “This is what my civics teachers had in mind when they described how our government works in the ninth grade.”

The White House is getting into the Myth debunking business.

Now, if you think the National Review is not unfair and unbiased, then check out this WTimes piece on surveys about what people think on the immigration issue, In a way I find it rather humorous.  The NRO poll completely ignored the CNN poll that shows something like 80% of the American people are not hard-line against illegals who are already here.

THE RON PAUL CIRCUS CONTINUES

Most of the time I agree with Captain Ed.  Unfortunately, I think he is grossly underestimating Ron Paul.

“…UPDATE: Folks, real conservatives don't propose to create special distinctions of criminals based on the color of their skin. (Neither do real libertarians, for that matter.) Here's the entire text of Ron Paul's newsletter, and another snippet (emphasis mine):

Regardless of what the media tell us, most white Americans are not going to believe that they are at fault for what blacks have done to cities across America. The professional blacks may have cowed the elites, but good sense survives at the grass roots. Many more are going to have difficultly avoiding the belief that our country is being destroyed by a group of actual and potential terrorists -- and they can be identified by the color of their skin. This conclusion may not be entirely fair, but it is, for many, entirely unavoidable.

Anyone who thinks that a man with this in his past can get elected President (as opposed to, say, the Senate seat from West Virginia) is as deluded as Ron Paul. Anyone defending these statements marginalizes himself.

I’ve seen too much lately from “Libertarian” and so-called “Conservative” sources this past week to give the supporters of Paul a pass.  I also know how terribly well organized he is – or the people who support him are.  Captain Ed is correct that they do not have the numbers to do anything but be an annoyance, but I still think these are the “voters” responsible for the 2006 GOP loss of the House and the Senate.   I’m thinking they can pull probably close to a quarter of a million, but that is enough to cause some serious mischief and damage.  Just look at the small margins that cost us House and Senate seats.  Don’t ever think these people were not organized to do damage to the GOP.   In 1988 he pulled nearly a half million votes in the Presidential election.  I will almost guarantee most of these voters, if still alive, are still supporting him.

Chicago Boyz  thinks it is political suicide for Paul, but from what has been coming to my inbox this week from his libertarian supporters, they are applauding him.

From what I can tell the organizing began during the latter years of the Clinton Administration.  I will detail more of this story at a later time.  Let’s just say I have a sinking feeling some of the grass-roots support for Paul and indeed for the whole anti-immigration movement start here in Lincoln County.  One of the reasons I began blogging is because of a trend I had been watching for about 6 years.  It is well organized.  I think it can serve up a quarter of a million votes.  Scattered in pockets throughout the country, a few thousand votes concentrated here and there could bring down
