GODSPEED MR. MONTGOMERY SCOTT AND GORDO!

Miss Piggy has a new hobby, bird watching, hummingbird watching to be precise.  How the little squirt plans to catch one is another thing all together.  Redford seems to be feeling a little better today.  I still think he’s terribly frail.

I’ve been following the status of my new Apple (I feel so d-i-r-t-y buying one) that was shipped the other day.  I don’t remember if I made many (I know I made a few) comments about HP’s shipping of that LEMON DZ8000 last July.  I think it took something like 7 business days.  Now, just look at this:  There is indeed a possibility that it will be here on Monday.  This process with HP was agony.

A MINI RANT FOR THE DAY

The Pet Food Recall

There are some schools of thought that suspect tainted gluten products have been in our pet food chain (and possibly human food chain) since last June, at least.  If this is the case, and additional foods were tainted, such as some of the specialty Menu Foods for that length of time, how many pets have actually died.  What is even worse is the possibility that tainted rice gluten was introduced into baby formula and baby cereal.

Why?

The almighty dollar, that’s why!

It is no different from the Maquiladoras in northern Mexico, where people were promised a decent wage once upon a time.  I know this for a fact because the husband of one of my friends owned one of the very first factories.  The object was to pay people a living wage so they could improve their life and improve the quality of life for people in Mexico.  Unfortunately, the whole principle has been completely corrupted.  Now it is no longer about paying a living wage, which they are not doing, but the multi-national corporate office showing a great bottom line.

Currently the average manufacturing wage in the US is around $23.00 per hour.

The average manufacturing wage in Mexico is around $2.30 per hour.

The average manufacturing wage in China is around thirty-five cents an hour.

The average take-home pay in Mexico is about $28 - $58 or so a week.

The average daily take home pay for an illegal immigrant from Mexico who is in the US is close to $48 a day.

Now do you want to understand the roots of our current illegal immigration problem?

How about this:

Because China pays a wage of about thirty-five cents an hour, Maquiladoras workers in Mexico have had their pay cut in half these past few years.  Now they MUST rely on their relatives who are living illegally in the US to send money back to Mexico so their families can survive.  You see, maquiladoras only pay something like 19% of what a family in Mexico needs to survive each week.

Why?

Why are we subsidizing multi-national corporations this way?

Not only are we dealing with a flood of illegal Mexican workers who are only trying to survive, our dogs and cats are now dying so multi-national corporations can make more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ money.  Then, we complain that the FDA is not doing its job.  The FDA is only a small part of the problem.  The greater problem is a magnificent bottom line so we can have cheep products at Target and Walmart.

What is going to happen when our HUMAN babies start dying because of tainted products from China – so we can have cheep products and multi-national corporations can show a healthy bottom line?

Where does corporate responsibility come into play?

David Schuler at Outside the Beltway,  has been keeping up with the pet food recall the way I have.  He has additional information and speculations as to the cause of the contamination.    Evidently the toxic ‘soup’ so to speak is a combination of three specific compounds, none of which are specifically toxic on their own, but mixed seem to be quite poisonous when ingested in quantity.

If The Glittering Eye is correct and it takes some time for these compounds to work, then this process had been going on for quite some time.  If this assumption proves to be correct, then we could be on the verge of a serious health care crises.  Itchmo reports that the compound has been found in tainted pork.

“…The end of this pet food crisis appears more elusive than ever…About 45 [California] state residents ate pork from hogs that consumed animal feed laced with melamine from China. What last month was a limited recall of canned pet food is on the verge of becoming a full-fledged public health scare. The FDA’s real detective work may be just beginning. Having found many sources of contamination, investigators must now determine exactly how widespread the problem is and how it began….”

Canada is now going to begin testing of vegetable protein imported from China for human consumption.  Yikes – what about all those “organic” Veggie Protein drinks we consume and pay a very high price for?

From the Chicago Tribune article:

“…In a statement, the FDA said that “food safety funding” for the year ending last Sept. 30 “was $376 million.” But funding for the agency’s Center for Food Safety has dropped from $48 million in 2003 to about to $30 million in 2006, according to the center’s 2006 budget priority statement. Full-time jobs in the Center for Food Safety have also been cut from 950 in 2003 to about 820 in 2006, according to the budget statement.

FDA looking for origins The FDA’s real detective work may be just beginning. Having found many sources of contamination, investigators must now determine exactly how widespread the problem is and how it began. The  importer of the bad wheat gluten, ChemNutra Inc. of Las Vegas, contends that its Chinese manufacturer, Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co., illicitly added melamine to the gluten in order to boost the measurable protein level and thus the price of the shipment. If so, the FDA may find itself pursuing criminal charges against the Chinese company.FDA officials Friday searched ChemNutra’s offices, as well as a pet food plant operated by Menu Foods in Emporia, Kan., according to The Associated Press. Menu Foods has recalled millions of cans of pet food in recent weeks. In China, the central government has been defensive about charges that an export shipment had been deliberately contaminated, at first denying that any tainted wheat gluten was even shipped to the U.S. But that tone has softened as the extent of the pet food recall expanded. On Friday, a government spokesman told USA Today that some shipments were contaminated.

The FDA is also examining imported vegetable proteins earmarked for human products like pizza, protein bars and baby formula. That investigation, still in its early stages, hasn’t uncovered any contaminated ingredients, but the agency, an FDA doctor said, wanted to “get ahead of the curve.”

The melamine-laced food reached hogs because surplus pet food—crumbled and broken food bits rejected as unsuitable for dogs or cats—was sent to hog farms and turned into feed. The FDA says bulk shipments of feed were delivered to hog farmers in California, Utah, Ohio, Kansas, Oklahoma, New York, North Carolina and South Carolina. FDA officials said they were also concerned that contaminated livestock feed may have been shipped to Missouri…Even as the tainted wheat gluten cases have multiplied, the FDA has learned of another problem: Chinese rice protein. U.S. importer Wilbur-Ellis told the agency that a single bag of rice protein that it had imported tested positive for the presence of melamine. Wilbur-Ellis imported the rice from Binzhou Futian Biology Technology Co. in China’s Shandong province. In the U.S., the protein went to five U.S. pet food makers in Utah, New York, Kansas and Missouri.

While the FDA has targeted select states for hog inspections, the pet food recall and the large number of sick cats and dogs have overwhelmed state agencies that often only investigate a dozen pet food complaints a year. The FDA says about 400 employees across the country are collecting pet food samples, monitoring the recalls’ effectiveness and preparing complaints. The investigation’s progress in Illinois alone illustrates the problem. About half of the 32 FDA investigators in the state have worked on responding to more than 500 complaints of sick or deceased dogs and cats since the recalls began March 16. They must collect medical records from veterinarians and gather samples of contaminated pet food. The office is also involved in recall effectiveness. “It’s very taxing on our resources,” said Scott MacIntire, director of the FDA’s Chicago office, which oversees state operations. MacIntire said his office is investigating a shipment of rice protein concentrate imported to Illinois and potentially used in a human product. ationwide, the FDA has only enough inspectors to check 1 percent to 2 percent of the 8.9 million imported food shipments in 2006.

“We don’t have the resources or the capabilities to test every single shipment of every single food item that crosses into our country or into our state borders,” said Frank Busta, director of the National Center for Food Protection and Defense.

Stupak is among a small number in Congress who for several years have pressed for stiffer food safety regulations. He said legislation likely to pass this year could include a provision giving the FDA authority to order food processors to recall questionable items. Currently, the FDA can issue mandatory recall orders only for baby formula, while other government safety agencies can demand the recall of goods such as unsafe toys and tires. “It took Menu Foods almost a whole month to do a full recall of the dog food,” Stupak said. “If they’re dragging their feet on the recall of dog food, in the meantime this tainted wheat gluten is going to hogs.”

Other fixes could include expanded funding for food safety inspections and labs, the right to conduct spot inspections, subpoena power for the FDA and country-of-origin labeling on food products. Congress has already passed the labeling law, but the Bush administration has declined to implement it, citing cost concerns.FDA officials acknowledged that they are closing seven labs but said they are older facilities that needed renovation and that other labs are being expanded to compensate...”

Those fabulous female Thunderbird pilots – not one but two!  YES!

“…Last year, Maj. Nicole Malachowski, 32, of Las Vegas, became the first woman ever to fly with the Thunderbirds, or any other elite military jet demonstration team. This year, Maj. Samantha Weeks, 31, of Rome, N.Y., joined the squadron. Both women have extensive experience flying fighter jets...”

MINI RANT #2

Tainted Obesity Studies

That “obesity” workplace study everyone is touting in order to further discriminate against anyone who isn’t anorexic is quite deceptive.  It uses BMI – or body mass index – in other words, BMI is so deceptive, President Bush (the exercise fitness freak) is considered over-weight.

“…A person 5 feet 5 inches tall, is obese at 180 pounds and morbidly obese, with a BMI of 40, at 240 pounds. Obesity brings a higher risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes…Dr. Truls Ostbye and colleagues at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina studied 11,728 health care and university employees who completed at least one health risk assessment questionnaire between 1997 and 2004.  Over an average of three years of follow-up, workers with higher BMIs tended to file more workers' compensation claims. People with BMIs of 40 or more had twice the rate of claims as people at recommended weights – especially claims related to back, wrist or arm, neck or shoulder, knee, foot or hip injuries. “The number of lost workdays was almost 13 times higher, medical claims costs were seven times higher and indemnity claims costs were 11 times higher among the heaviest employees compared with those of recommended weight,” Ostbye's team wrote. ..”

NO ONE IS MENTIONING THE REST OF THE STUDY:

“…For the second study, Dr. Soham Al Snih of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and colleagues studied 12,725 adults 65 years or older.  None were disabled at the beginning of the study, which started in 1982 and ended in 1993.  The researchers questioned the volunteers every year about health conditions, demographics and psychosocial characteristics. Blood pressure, height and weight and physical function were also measured.  Over the 11 years, 3,570 of the volunteers became disabled, and 2,019 died.

“Subjects with BMIs of lower than 18.5 (underweight) or 30 or higher (obese) at baseline were significantly more likely to experience disability during the follow-up period,” Al Snih's team wrote.

Please note the following:

But being simply overweight did not cause health trouble. People with BMIs of 25 to 30 – 150 pounds to 180 pounds for someone 5 feet 5 inches – lived longer than people who weighed less. …”

And interestingly, nothing is mentioned about the risk of osteoporosis and women who are of normal weight or less.  It is extremely RARE fora person who has been overweight or “obese” their entire life to experience osteoporosis.  In all the calculations about weight, health, and bone health, you never see a calculation about what ‘normal’ size women and those who are underweight are going to cost the system when their bones start breaking and the health care system is hit by osteoporosis related problems.

THOSE DIRTY LYIN’ DEMS

Just as Rush predicted the other day, liberals without a sense of humor are peeing all over themselves (sorry about the crude comment, but it is appropriate) about his “Barack the Magic Negro” parody, which he has been using for quite some time.

MY MINI THIRD RANT OF THE DAY

Reagan Messiah Syndrome

A UK Headline Proclaims that Fred Thompson Is the New Reagan.  Then over at The Opinion Journal the other day, we find another article about Republican candidates trying to be Reaganesque.

The conservative world is looking for the second coming of Ronald Reagan.  I think that’s the reason some are so interested in Fred Thompson, the actor, Republican, and “conservative”.  As I’ve said many times, the greatest problem with this theory is the fact that looking for the messiah blinds the lookers to reality.  There is never going to be another Reagan.  Why do conservatives keep dishonoring his name by looking for another.  We all know this is the last thing Reagan would want.
