Great News:  Captain Ed’s wife is doing great.  Her transplant is done.  The donor is doing well.  Now, start saying prayers for my friend Carrla.  She needs a lung transplant.

We had about 6 inches of the white stuff today!  If I’d not seen 12” on Easter eve three years ago I would be shocked.  But here in Ruidoso, they say the first snow of the season can be in June and the last snow of the season can be in June!  It’s about 38 as I write this.  Things are melting and the sun is out, but – we get the benefit of all that nice moisture settling into things just as they are upping the fire danger to “moderate”.  This helps, much.

I can't get over how much better Miss Piggy is.  Now the little stinker is getting into trouble!  So far she is doing okay with her meds, even though she runs every time she sees me coming.

There is an interesting thread over on CNET about people considering Mac v. Windows now that Vista has messed things up so much.  I couldn’t come at a better time for me.

TODAY’S RANT:  KEEPING THE LITTLE WOMAN SILENT!

The latest dust up seems to be over the fact that Rudy Giuliani  has said that his wife will play a significant role as his advisor.  I heard Romney over on Cavuto completely disagreeing with this, how his wife would not have a role in his Administration.  I’m not quite sure what Judy Giuliani’s positions are, but I do know I definitely agree with the Giuliani premise of a modern marriage.  We live in a different world today.  Gone are the days when Mamie Eisenhower who was completely oblivious to what Ike was doing.  I have more problems with Mitt Romney who says his wife will not be taking such an active roll in his administration.  Any man who keeps his wife walking two steps behind, or in the background the way Romney seems to be doing is not going to get my vote.  I don’t like men who aren’t capable of recognizing the contribution of the women in their lives.  After the week I’ve had, dealing with the delicate balance of male testosterone and now allowing women to be treated equally in the field in which I write – my vote goes to the candidate who shows their spouse the most respect.

Until he was elected President, Lincoln’s most important and trusted advisor was his wife, Mary.  Once in the White House, she was pushed aside.  For revenge, she went shopping!  FDR listened to Eleanor.  Truman listed to his wife.  Ronnie listened to Nancy.  Nixon treated Pat like a dog.  I’ve been told by someone who witnessed his behavior first hand that he was quite abusive of her.  If our current POTUS treated his wife badly, his mother would wipe the floor with him.  The bottom line is quite simple (as far as Republicans are concerned).  If a person has no respect for his/her spouse and no respect for their opinion, how can you expect them to respect the American people?

Let’s be honest about something else.  Any dimwit who thinks we are not voting for the ‘spouse’ but just the candidate is living in a parallel universe where reality is quite different from our own.  I’m not married, but I know the give and take within my parents’ marriage and in my grandparents.  When my father listens to my mother, he makes money.  Same thing with my grandfather.  I can understand someone how isn’t involved in a marital union or who has a bad taste in their mouth making a comment, but if someone is married and they condemn Giuliani for saying he would listen to his wife and allow her to sit in on a Cabinet meeting IF – (please read the fine print) – they were discussing something near and dear to her.  But, I can’t handle a comment when it comes from a goodie two-shoes woman who has put herself in a secondary role, giving her husband head of the house hold – just because Paul said to do so.  Sorry, that doesn’t work for me.  Let’s be honest here.  If I were married to a man running for POTUS, I’d probably be considered the Republican version of Hillary.  I’m sorry, this is yet another conservative hit on Giuliani.

Every president has people who are his behind-the-scenes advisors.  Because a man is honest about his feelings about his (current – I’m sorry – but when you come from a family like mine where you uncle has had as many marriages as Giuliani you develop a sense of humor about it) wife he is now going to be criticized!  Heck, I think Romney’s comments that he would listen to others and not necessarily listen to his wife says even more.  He has no respect for his wife.  I know, shades of Hillary – but get over it.  Frankly, I think if the GOP and our dear conservatives (I too was nasty) had been nicer, maybe we wouldn’t be living in this culture of political acidity.

Is not listening to your wife – or not acknowledging the possibility that she might have something valuable to bring to the table (even cabinet) with her a conservative or a “Christian” thing?  Please don’t insult my attention.  Thinking back to the past five Republican presidents, the only one who did not listen to his wife, and treat her as a trusted and even “cabinet” level advisor was Richard Nixon.  I rest my case.

THOSE LOVEABLE LYING DEMOCRATS

Why is HRM Nancy I going to Syria?

In the CSM today Mackubin Thomas Owens has a piece about today’s Copperhead Dem.

“…Today's Democratic Party seems to have inherited the mantle, if not the name, of their Copperhead forebears. Like the Copperheads of old, today's Democrats put the entire blame for the war and its conduct on the administration. While the Copperheads of old assured the Union soldiers that the Rebels could not be defeated, today's Copperheads assure us that the Iraqi insurgents are invincible.  The Copperheads of old described Lincoln as a bloodthirsty tyrant, trampling the rights of Southerners and Northerners alike. And they portrayed Union soldiers as instruments of his tyrannical administration. Invoking the USA Patriot Act, Guantánamo Bay, and Abu Ghraib, today's Copperheads – from lawmakeres to bloggers – call President Bush a tyrant and a terrorist. Some have even suggested similarity between US soldiers serving in Iraq and Nazis in World War II. Rarely do they censure the enemy in such terms.  Like the Copperheads of old, today's Democrats offer no viable alternative to their respective president's policy except to "end the war now." And just as former Copperheads preferred Lincoln's failure to saving the Union, the current ones would rather see Bush lose than the country win in Iraq.

Of course, rhetoric is one thing. An action to obstruct the war effort is another. With the recent shameful vote in Congress to hamstring the commander in chief's authority and ability to conduct the war in Iraq, the Democrats have assumed Copperhead status by moving from the former to the latter….”

I’ve not said much about the Gonzales issue for several reasons.  First, I’ve not had time to do the digging that is necessary to say anything beyond ‘those lying Democrats’.  Now I have additional information.  If anyone should be investigated for abuse of power and corruption it should be Chuck Schumer.  Evidently, according to John Podhortz’s article today, there is a connection between Gonzales’ Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty and his possible connection to Chuck Schumer.

Heads do need to roll, but they need to be the head of Schumer and McNulty, who obviously lied about the situation.  Another former assistant, Kyle Simpson yesterday said Iglesias should not have been on the ‘firing list’.  He thought it had something to do with some ‘courthouse indictments’.   I think the indictment of Manny Aragon yesterday completely negotiates that statement.

Thanks to Liz Mair for this one.  No one in NM lives with the illusion that the Dems here are pure. Manny Aragon, probably the most powerful political figure in NM has finally been indicted on corruption charges. I think you are going to eventually discover the whole dust-up between NM GOPs Heather Wilson and Pete Domenici and David Iglesias.  Evidently Iglesias was not doing his job, investigating Aragon in a timely fashion, thus both Wilson and Domenici decided to light a little fire under his tushie.  Funny how not long after Iglesias is history the indictments go down.  Makes one wonder, doesn’t it?   The best apart of this is that former NM Governor Gary Johnson, who the Dems and some Republicans made into a laughing stock – primarily because he was so honest he squeaked, is now vindicated!   Getting back to Iglesias, if it looks like a duck, waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck – maybe he just wasn’t doing his job!

“…In an interview Tuesday, Iglesias said the two lawmakers called him about a well-known criminal investigation involving a Democratic legislator. He declined to provide their party affiliation, but his comments indicated the callers were Republicans. New Mexico media outlets reported last year that the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office in Albuquerque had opened a probe into allegations involving former Democratic state senator Manny Aragon and government construction projects in Bernalillo County. No charges have been filed in the case. Iglesias said the lawmakers who called him seemed focused on whether charges would be filed before the November elections. He said the calls made him feel "pressured to hurry the subsequent cases and prosecutions" but said he did not receive similar contacts from anyone in the executive branch. He acknowledged he made a mistake by not reporting the calls to the Justice Department….”

And

“…Domenici is dealing with allegations that he and another New Mexico Republican, Rep. Heather A. Wilson, pressured U.S. Attorney David C. Iglesias in late October to produce an anticipated indictment of former New Mexico Senate President Manny Aragon. The fact that Iglesias was one of eight U.S. attorneys fired by the Bush administration after the 2006 elections has added fuel to the political brush fire.  Critics contend that Wilson was looking for a boost during the toughest race of her career, a contest with Democratic state Attorney General Patricia Madrid that Wilson ended up winning by 861 votes. A timeline presented by Iglesias, according to political blogger Heath Haussamen, placed a call he received from Wilson in October as coming shortly after the second of four polls showed her trailing in the race. Domenici’s calls, according to Iglesias’ recollection, came about four days after a fourth poll showed Wilson losing. Both Domenici and Wilson have not denied making the calls but say they were not meant to intimidate or influence Iglesias. Domenici issued a statement on March 4 apologizing for his call, while Wilson said in a March 6 statement that her call was not “motivated by politics or partisanship.”

Seriously, if the other canned prosecutors are in the same boat as Iglesias, then they don’t have a leg to stand on, and Schumer is doing nothing but political grand standing because of his hatred of George W. Bush.  John Podhoretz has an interesting take on how the Dems are going to pay. Now, you want one of those ahh moments?  Well, much of this was brought on by…

“…But there is one aspect of all this that should be examined with great care - though it's the one Democrats are pursuing most aggressively. And that is the conduct of Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty. It was McNulty who first told the Senate that seven of the U.S. attorneys were dismissed "for performance-related reasons" and not due to political or policy differences.  That claim appears to have been deliberately deceptive. But that's not the most troubling aspect of McNulty's conduct.  The worst part is that he committed what seems like an open-and-shut case of slander.  It's not just wrong but immoral to say people were dismissed for cause - fired because they deserved to be fired - when in fact they were dismissed for other reasons.  Such a slur might affect a person's ability to secure gainful employment and raise questions about his fitness for future work in the government.  Even more shocking, McNulty chose to testify in this manner in direct contravention of guidance given him by the White House. According to ABC's Jan Crawford Greenberg, White House Counsel Harriet Miers "said the administration should take the firm position that it would not comment on personnel issues."  McNulty apparently chose to make the claim because he felt he needed to testify in more detail about what happened - in part to maintain his longstanding relationship with New York's own senior senator, Chuck Schumer….”

PRIMARIES 2008

I don’t know where Romney gets off on this one.  He’s going around SC hinting that either Jim DeMint and Mark Sanford are on his short list for VP.

Dan Hoover of the Greenville News is stressing how Romney is down in the polls and up in spending.

Hoover also has an explanation why McCain is ahead of Giuliani in SC.  It is a matter of organization.

McCain denies the lying Dem charges he wanted to quit the GOP.

RED FRIDAY

This comes from my friend Dwight Harp

Will you give this to my Daddy?

As a Company, Southwest Airlines is going to support "Red Fridays."

Last week I was in Atlanta , Georgia attending a conference. While I was in the airport, returning home, I heard several people behind me beginning to clap and cheer. I immediately turned around and witnessed one of the greatest act's of patriotism I have ever seen.

Moving thru the terminal was a group of soldiers in their camo's, as they began heading to their gate everyone (well almost everyone) was abruptly to their feet with their hands waving and cheering. When I saw the soldiers, probably 30-40 of them, being applauded and cheered for it hit me. I'm not alone. I'm not the only red blooded American who still loves this country
and supports our troops and their families.

Of course I immediately stopped and began clapping for these young unsung heroes who are putting their lives on the line everyday for us so we can go to school, work and ho me without fear or reprisal. Just when I thought I could not be more proud of my country or of our service men and women a young girl, not more than 6 or 7 years old, ran up to one of the male
soldiers. He kneeled down and said "hi," the little girl then she asked him if he would give something to her daddy for her. The young soldier, he didn't look any older than maybe 22 himself, said he would try and what did she want to give to her daddy. Then suddenly the little girl grabbed the neck of this soldier, gave him the biggest hug she could muster and then kissed him on the cheek.

The mother of the little girl, who said her daughters name was Courtney, told the young soldier that her husband was a Marine and had been in Iraq for 11 months now. As the mom was explaining how much her daughter, Courtney, missed her father, the young soldier began to tear up. When this temporarily single mom was done explaining her situation, all of the
soldiers huddled together for a brief second. Then one of the other servicemen pulled out a military looking walkie-talkie. They started playing with the device and talking back and forth on it. After about 10-15 seconds of this, the young soldier walked back over to Courtney, bent down and said this to her, "I spoke to your daddy and he told me to give this to
you." He then hugged this little girl that he had just met and gave her a kiss on the cheek. He finished by saying "your daddy told me to tell you that he loves you more than anything and he is coming home very soon."

The mom at this point was crying almost uncontrollably and as the young soldier stood to his feet he saluted Courtney and her mom. I was standing no more than 6 feet away from this entire event unfolded. As the soldiers began to leave, heading towards their gate, people resumed their applause. As I stood there applauding and looked around, their were very few dry eyes, including my own. That young soldier in one last act of selflessness, turned around and blew a kiss to Courtney with a tear rolling down his cheek.

We need to remember everyday all of our soldiers and their families and thank God for them and their sacrifices. At the end of the day, it's good to be an American.

RED FRIDAYS ----- Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority". We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or over-bearing. We get no liberal media coverage on TV, to reflect our message or our opinions. Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message
that.. Every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar will wear something red. By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers.

If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family. It will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on. The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is...We need your support and your prayers. Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example; and
wear something red every Friday.
