I’ve had a discouraging day.  Our local museum, The Hubbard Museum of the American West, refuses to sell my books.  They are doing an exhibit on Wyatt Earp and I am a local author.  You would think they would even schedule a book signing.  Forget that.  Do I sound bitter, yes, I am.  I’m furious.  Ruidoso and that blasted museum have a reputation for supporting local artists.  They also support local authors as long as they are one specific person, whose name I am not mentioning.

 

Oh, BlogHarbor's server nearly crashed this past weekend due to trackback spam.  They are working on the problem, which is why everyone is having a problem tracking back to me.

 

Redford is home.  No, he was not declawed.  Fact is, Dr. Franklin discovered he has very serious dental problems!  They had a difficult time believing Redford was just 9 months old!  When he arrived home and I opened the door of the carrier, he uttered a feline profanity that is the worst, trust me, the very worst, filthiest piece of feline profanity I’ve ever heard!  And, when one considered the foul feline mouth the late great Gracie had, well – I think you get the drift.  As he flew down the steps to hide under my bedroom bed, he uttered yet another feline profanity.  I figured I wouldn’t see him for days.  But – around 6:30 this evening he surfaced, and visited with me.  Will wonders never cease!?!  I just knew he would never have anything to do with me.  I took Miss Piggy down to the pediatrician for her sneeze.  He wasn’t there so his assistant listened to her breathing, etc.  Her nose is stuffy but her lungs are clear.  She did great her first time out, but then she has that look of disdain down just like a grown-up feline.  When she arrived home, she and Rumsfeld played for quite awhile.  I’m not going to tell you about Rumsfeld and Redford.  Let’s just say it confirms the vet’s commentary on Redford’s gender identification. 

 

Oh, I set up the cat trap today to see if I could catch Mommy Cat or Little Joe so they could have surgery.  I caught Rumsfeld.  He thoroughly enjoyed the Fancy Feast salmon.

According to Maggie, they will be doing the Rosary for Steve Chavez tomorrow afternoon.  Don’t forget to pray for his family.

 

Our local rag, the Ruidoso News,   finally salutes Steve Chavez, who gave  his life for our freedom.  Lance Corporal Chaves “died in a non-combat incident in Anbar province, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expedition-ary Force out of Camp Pendleton, Calif.”

 

Quoting from a letter Chavez wrote to his family, from  the local paper,

“…I've been through some pretty hard times, in the short time I've been in the Marine Corp. None harder then what I'm about to face. Yes I'm scared; nothing is scarier than the uncertainty of what your future holds for you. I'm prepared to face whatever lies ahead. I put my life in the hands of the Lord. And pray that He guides my fellow soldiers and I down a safe path, that He will calm our fears, and give us the strength to do the job we have been trained to do, and to do that job well. There are many lonely nights, when you're lying in your bunk thinking of family and friends, …I've never been more proud of the choices I made in my life than the day I graduated from basic training. When my drill instructor placed that Anchor, Globe and Eagle Pin in my hand I knew then I was a UNITED STATES MARINE! I'm Proud to protect and serve My Country I'm Proud to protect and serve My CommunityI'm Proud to protect and serve you…”

The first woman to win the UK’s Military Cross.   

“To this day she remains modest: a 5ft tall slip of a girl, and yet one so courageous that she has become the first female officer to win the Military Cross. Pte Michelle "Chuck" Norris, 19, had only recently completed her Army training when she braved heavy sniper fire to climb on top of a Warrior armoured vehicle to haul her sergeant to safety after he was wounded in the head. One bullet from an AK47 rifle ripped through her rucksack as she came under fire from five different positions. But she refused to let go of Colour Sgt Ian Page, dragging him to safety and then jokingly referring to him as "Dad" as they and their comrades waited in the darkness for a rescue helicopter. The details of that terrifying mission in Al-Amarah were still running through her mind yesterday, as she received her Military Cross during an investiture with the Queen….”

"At just 19 years of age and having only recently completed basic training, Private Michelle Norris was deployed as a medical orderly with The Queen's Royal Hussars Battle Group in Al Amarah, Southern Iraq. 11 June 2006 saw the largest and most intense battle in Iraq since 2004. A search operation in Al Amarah turned into a war fighting engagement when her Company Group came under heavy, accurate and sustained attack from a well organised enemy force of over 200.

 

"During the heaviest of the fighting the company commander's group came under accurate sniper fire and the commander of the Warrior carrying Private Norris was shot in the face and seriously injured. Private Norris realised the severity of the situation immediately and without thought or care for her own personal safety, she dismounted and climbed onto the top of the Warrior to administer life saving first aid to the casualty. On seeing her on the top of the Warrior the sniper opened fire again, firing a further three rounds at her, one hitting the radio mounted on the side of the turret inches from her leg. Despite this she continued to administer first aid through the commander's hatch to the casualty until the gunner pulled her into the turret for her own safety.

 

"Despite the very real risks from sniper fire, heavy small arms fire and rocket propelled grenade she deliberately ignored the danger to her own life in order to administer live saving first aid to the commander of the vehicle. Private Norris's actions on 11 June were extremely courageous and outstandingly brave and have rightly earned her the Military Cross for actions to save the life of a comrade when under fire."

Elizabeth Edwards needs and deserves our prayers.  I know this sounds horrible, but I think everyone should be forced to go through a cancer scare.  I did.  It changed my life.  I am a better person.  BUT – I had a low level melanoma.  My aunt was given nearly a death sentence with stem cell cancer maybe four years ago.  She is doing some new treatments and right now is completely cancer free.  But, we still hold our breath.  The thing about dealing with a horrible disease, from what I’ve learned from my aunt, is you go day by day, play each game one at a time, and just go about living.  The worst thing that could happen for Elizabeth Edwards is for her husband to stop his campaign.  She would never forgive herself if he did.  The poor woman is Stage 4.  Prayers cure people.
