IT IS TIME FOR CONSERVATIVES TO REALIZE THEY ARE REPUBLICANS
(and start acting like it)
Oh, I remember something. I was going to have a rant and rave about Tom Delay’s ‘appearance’ on Rush yesterday and why they both define what is seriously wrong with conservatives. If ‘conservatives’ don’t sit up and take notice, they are going to ruin things for all of us.
Sometimes I’m not that bright. It takes me awhile to figure things out the way I should. If you are a regular reader of The Pink Flamingo, you know I’ve been rating and railing about ‘conservatives’ for months. I think any good Republican is at the point where we just want to scream and start throwing things, preferably buckets of ice cold water, but since Algore has declared global warming, I can’t find water cold enough. (sarcasm)
Finally, I have realized what the problem is.
When the term ‘liberal’ is used, it is automatically interchangeable with ‘Democratic Party’. You know that 90% of liberals are going to vote Dem. A few may stray over to the Greens, but they are smart enough to know that the only way to accomplish anything is to vote in a rock solid block.
But – and here is the very serious problem for the GOP, many conservatives do not identify with the Republican Party. If we do not come up with a way to somehow get conservatives to listen to reason, and bring them in from their petty little Libertarian, Constitutional, or other tacky little third party platform, the GOP is going to have problems and conservatives will forever consign themselves to the minority.
My next question: Is that what conservatives want?
Sometimes I do not think conservatives know how to win and how to be gracious about it. There is nothing glorious or admirable about defeat. There is also nothing glorious and admirable about people who lack the maturity to know when compromise is necessary. And there in lies the problem – political maturity.
No one can fault our good ‘conservatives’ and Freepers for being idealistic. There is nothing wrong with idealism, when it is tempered with mature, grown up (phrase used on purpose) reality. There are times when idealists need a slap in the face of cold, hard reality.
The reality is this. Moderate Republicans are willing to work, pragmatically. Liberal Republicans are pulled along kicking and screaming, but there are times you cannot trust them simply because they are liberal. The average “Reagan” conservative is as good a Republican as we’re ever going to see, but then there are the idealists. Nothing is good enough for them. No one person is good enough. They live in this rose colored universe tinted with ribbons of white and blue, with warm and fuzzy photos of Ronald Reagan, lamenting the loss of their greatest leader. All the while they are unaware that their version of who Reagan was and reality are two completely different people.
They long, dreamily, for a messiah, unaware at times that the Messiah came to earth 2000 years ago. Like the self-righteous Sadducees and Pharisees they have become, today’s ultra conservatives would do unto a real ‘Conservative’ leader what that specific class did to the one true Messiah. They would not recognize him or her and would send them to be crucified on what ever cross their leaders like Rush and Hannity demand.
Mature adults realize this idealistic hope for a leader is nothing but a fantasy. The only way conservatives are ever going to realize their goals is to stop longing for leaders and step up to the plate and start leading by example. And – when I say ‘example’ I am talking real, actual, do-able reality. Realty is pragmatic. Reality is compromising without sacrificing basic principals.
The only way today’s idealistic conservative is going to be assimilated into political reality is to quit dreaming. Stop complaining. Stop looking for perfection. Start thinking what is best for
P. S. While you are at it, quit trying to destroy any Republican who disagrees with you.
