Almost a month ago, the Wednesday Hero Blogroll received an email from a reader named Mike Gardner that contained something he had written in honor of this country's heroes. He asked that it be considered for a future post. It took almost a month, but here is his tribute.
At The Right Time, We Remember
The honor roll goes back farther than we can remember, it contains names we will never know... I wasn't there when the American Colonial Army stood winter guard in the snows of Valley Forge wearing bloody rags for boots as they fought for my freedom. I wasn't there in the war of 1812. I wasn't in the trenches when the German's seared the lungs of young American men with mustard gas as they fought for my freedom in World War One. I wasn't at Pearl Harbor when a single Japanese bomb detonated a million pounds of black powder on the Arizona and instantaneously killed over one thousand American sailors preparing to defend my freedom against the Japanese and the Nazis. I didn't see the bullet riddled bodies of the Americans who died defending my freedom in Korea. I only vaguely remember the nightly news clips of American soldiers as they carried out our government's orders in the jungles and swamps and tunnels of Vietnam. I have never been with a family who lost a son or a daughter defending Kuwait, Afghanistan, or Iraq. I wasn't there with any of them when they suffered as prisoners of war in any of these wars. I have never been with a family whose child died in a peace time military training exercise. Not every one of our veterans saw combat. Some were clerks, cooks, mechanics, machinists. Some served during war time, some served during peace time, some serve in peace today, ready for battle tomorrow. Today they prepare for the ongoing war against terrorists. Some gave their lives, some suffered wounds, some saw things that no human should ever have to see, and many did things that no human should ever have to do. And all gave their daily life, for a period of time, while many more gave their time to work in the industries that sustained our veterans. Not all of those who have protected my freedom were even in the military. Some of them were the firemen, policemen, and paramedics who risked their lives each day, rushing in where most of us would never tread. Some are the doctors and nurses who treat the wounded, and go home and cry for them. Some of them were "just" passengers on commercial airline flights who, with faith in Christ, calmly chose to fight, and die if necessary, rather than let Flight 93 be used as a weapon against their country and their fellow citizens. When I tried to join the US Air Force, my application was turned down for medical reasons. Because others were, and will be there, I am privileged to continue to live in the greatest nation the world has ever known and to enjoy the greatest freedoms that any people have ever known. The honor roll stretches forward to times, and places, and names we will never know... And so I thank you, veteran, whoever you are, and wherever you are, whenever your service. Thank you Vet. Thanks Dad. Today, I remember WHY I am free, and I thank you. I know that when you were asked, at the right time, like Christ, you gave your life for me.
These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero. We Should Not Only Mourn These Men And Women Who Died, We Should Also Thank God That Such People Lived This post is part of the Wednesday Hero Blogroll. If you would like to participate in honoring the brave men and women who serve this great country, you can find out how by going here.
Did Rudy Giuliani just "win" the GOP Nomination today?

STOP THE EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN ACT
I also need to do a head’s up for Absolute Zero and their fight against pedophiles. The McCain Stop the Exploitation of Children Act. and information about it. The cons of the bill. Seems like the liberals are afraid Freepers will post photos of naked children on liberal sites to shut them down. I’ve been blogging for a year and a half. Seems to me all a site owner needs to do is tweek their spam settings and moderate trackbacks.
The Free Speech Coalition doesn’t approve of it.
Rose admits to betting on the Reds. I still think what Bonds is doing is far worse. On Sat while we were doing the book signing, Earp biographer and baseball writer Casey Tefertiller had this very discussion. Casey takes the position that gambling on baseball breaks the most fundamental commandments of the game, breaks a trust. My argument is steroids are just as bad and users should be treated the same as those who bet on baseball.

CONSERVATIVES UNHIINGED
You really want to know what is wrong with conservatives today? Read Michael Medved’s most excellent column today then check out the comments. I think it is about time a few conservatives learned some manners.
STUPID IS AS LIBERALS AND DEMS DO
Case in point – the whole Gonzales issue and the firing of a handful of political appointees, while ignoring Janet Reno’s firing of every darn one of ‘em.

Is Obama soft on crime?
Will Kerik hurt Rudy?
McCain’s fight against pedophiles.
Is Giuliani’s lead fragile?
I do approve of this move by Bill Richardson.
Frankly, I think trying to read decision and backbone into Romney’s Schievo comments is a crock.
Thirteen Remarkable People I Have Known or Met in My Lifetime
(in no particular order except for #1)
1. Edwin Feltman Froehlich I (my grandfather)
He literally walked with kings, should have been one, but never lost the common touch. He built an empire out of nothing but his bare hands and a will of steel. A ‘common man’ he was laughingly proud of his humility. He never once in his life lost faith in his Lord, Jesus Christ. I miss him every day. As time goes on, I miss him more and more. If I had just learned a few of his life lessons I would be a better, a wealthier person. “If you spent one penny, you must now earn two to make up for it.” If I asked him for a dollar, he would ask me why and refuse. If I asked him for a thousand dollars, he would willingly and unquestioningly hand it over to me. His rational was simple. I would waste a dollar but must have good reason to ask for a thousand and it would not go to waste.
2. Ted Williams
The moral of this story is simple. If you are going to skip school to go meet the greatest player in the history of baseball, don’t get your picture (with said hero) plastered all over the front pages of the local paper.
3. Lindsey Graham
People ask me why I defend Lindsey against those irrational hits from the Right. It’s quite simple. Lindsey is probably the most honorable man I have ever met in my life. I would love to tell you why I know this, having experienced it first hand, but it would involve betraying the confidence of a third party (someone I care about) so I will not do it. Let’s just say I once unjustly berated Lindsey about defending an individual. Instead of defending himself and explaining his reasons for doing so, he allowed me to give him a very strong tongue lashings (one of the worst in my life). Months later I discovered he was right and I was wrong. When I apologized and asked why he would not tell me so, he commented that he would rather have me rather have me think ill of him than of my friend’s father. That is a man of honor. For those “conservatives” who are constantly after him for not having a more perfect conservative rating than 96%, they need to know one other thing about Lindsey. He loves the Lord.
4. The Very Reverend Ronald R. Thomson
Fr. Ron is the most perfect example of what a minister of the Lord should be and usually isn’t. He is simply one of the greatest people I have ever known.
5. The Reverend Anna Gaddy
We call her “Hot Hands”. Anna Gaddy is another example of the perfect minister of the Lord. She is quiet, humble, and when you see her you would think she is just this proper little lady. Well, I swear the Beach Boys wrote “Little Old Lady from
6. Doug Chaffee
Doug was the head of IBM’s art department during the Apollo era. His renderings of what Apollo should look like sold the program to Congress. Doug loves the Lord. While other arts in his genre are out grubbing for money Doug is humbly volunteering his time, illustrating (for free) Sunday School flyers. So, the Lord has blessed him. He is financially the most successful artist I’ve ever known.
7. Michael Hurd
Michael is probably the finest artist his family has ever produced. Considering his parents were the illustrious Peter Hurd and Henrietta Wyeth, his uncle is Andrew Wyeth, and his grandfather was N.C. Wyeth, that says a heck of a lot. It’s like this. Michael is a heck of a nice guy who hides his shinning light under a basket.
8. Johnny Bench
9. Larry Knuth
If they were to give out life-time achievement awards for dads, Larry would be one of the first recipients. There are some men who go out and collect millions and billions and crow about their remarkable accomplishments. Sure, they build towering skyscrapers which they name after themselves. They write best-sellers promoting their life in glowing terms. They become rock-stars. Then there are men like Larry. There will never be a sky-scraper named after him. He could have been a rock-star but he gave up a very promising career as a studio guitarist so he could take care of his son with special needs. He will never make a billion, nor even a million. Do you know how hard it is for a two parent mom to find a job during school hours? Now try being a single parent dad doing the same thing. So much for that promising career in rock and roll. So much for the millions. It really doesn’t matter. Larry is the real deal. I looked at him the other night and at his son. I don’t know how he has done it, but he has. Too bad men like Larry Knuth don’t get Father of the Year Awards.
10. Dizzy Dean
11. Gerald P. Carr
12. Hank Aaron
13. Ronald Reagan Ma Schoaf.
I think Ronald Reagan would approve of being dropped from my list for this extraordinary woman who was, in many ways, quite a bit like his mother. I still have the gift her son Paul gave my grandparents one Christmas. It was the ‘widow’s mite’ all they could afford. It is in a very inexpensive frame, calligraphy on cardboard, “The Lord is the strength of my life”. It hang in my grandparents bedroom until I made off with it a few years before I lost them both. Ma Schoaf was the humble widow, rich in faith and love of Christ.
