Twenty years ago today, eight brave men and women died, needlessly

(Their  lives were snuffed out by an incompetent administrator of NASA who was more interested in keeping to a schedule than he was safety. )

’On 28 January 1986, in his TV broadcast to the nation on the day of the space shuttle Challenger disaster, President Reagan concluded: `We will never forget them this morning as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God.'” 

Everyone who covered the shuttle program from the very beginning had a favorite.  Columbia would soar, graceful and majestic into the air.  Discovery is a work-horse.  But Challenger, wonderful, glorious Challenger would punch it, take off so fast, so determined to slip the surly bonds of earth and reach for the stars that there was no stopping her.  She was my favorite.  I was there for her first launch, Sally’s Ride.  Twenty years later it still hurts just as much as it did that horrible day when those fateful words, “Go with throttle up” were uttered and she blew into a billion pieces.

 

I can’t believe it has been twenty years.  That day I was wearing a magnificent five strand Santa Domingo (Pueblo) carved beads. I was not wearing my gold charm, which I had done religiously for years. I was sitting in office of my banker, a friend.  We were discussing my recent lobby work with the space program.  Another friend who also worked in the bank, Merry Kelly, came in to tell us there had been a horrible accident.  My world changed that day, January 28, 1986.  I wasn’t sure why at the time, but it did.  I rushed home, knowing the local media would be calling me for comments.  I rushed over to Anderson, about thirty minutes away, to met with one of the members of my Board of Directors and wait for the television crews to roll in.  They brought with them a video of the explosion, which I had not seen.  I can’t believe I was so calm as Phil and I narrated, for live local television, the steps of the launch and what might have happened.  I had them play it back again and pointed to a large chunk of Challenger falling into the Atlantic, commenting that if it was the cock-pit several of the crew could still be alive.

 

Weeks later I received a transcript from another colleague, confirming my suspicious that indeed, a portion of Challenger had survived.  From what I read, several members of Challenger’s crew survived, only to die of oxygen depravation as they waited, vainly, for rescue.  You see, seven dead martyrs were much better than a few live witnesses.  Months later, when the acting administrator of NASA was up for full approval by the Senate, it just so happened Senator Fritz Hollings, of SC was the chairman of the committee.  I organized what we called a ‘phone tree’ of people from South Carolina.  The morning of the vote people began calling his office at 8:30.  The vote was scheduled for something like 11:00.  At 10:45 I made the final call and was put directly through to the Senator’s Chief of Staff.  I was told, immediately, that the Senator surrendered, and the nomination was being rejected.  Several thousand people called that morning.  I had a bit of revenge.  It was also my last act dealing with the space program.  My heart was broken.  It is still my first love, but there was such a sense of betrayal I could never return.

 

 Twelve years later I discovered even the Congressional committees investigating the accident, and NASA’s most dedicated advocate in the House knew nothing of the transcripts.  I never wore the necklace again, trading it in for a Navajo Squash Blossom.  From that time on I have worn the gold shuttle charm, religiously, before each launch.  The only time I did not was in February of 2003. 

 

I know there is denial of a cover-up, that nothing happened, everyone died instantly.  Unfortunately, the material I saw proved otherwise.  The source was impeccable. You see, it wasn’t NASA or even Congress who caused the problem, well maybe NASA, but not in the way that you might think.  It was caused by abject incompetence from the very top, the acting Administrator of NASA had no business being where he was.  He was so determined to keep to a schedule and look good that he ignored all established safety protocol. Seven men and women died that day, and their deaths were completely unnecessary.

THE SAGA CONTINUES....

This afternoon I was doing my kitten wrangler's job - wrangling kittens.  Only one avoids being held, which is great.  They continue to watch FOX News, fair and balanced, so they can be accustomed to noise and different human voices.  I was sitting with a magazine in hand.  The little calico came over and she made an attempt with one little paw to grab for a page, she failed and lost her balance a little, then just stuck her little nose in the air and began licking her paw and wiping her face.  She has turned into a true cat with attitude!  It was adorable.  For the first time Auntie Doc Holiday is babysitting.  She loves kittens. 

 

LIMITED POSTING TODAY!

 

I am cutting my post short today.  The condo is a smelly wreck, yes, I tried cooking again.  Had to clean (self cleaning) the oven, which caught on fire last night (the oven debris, not the oven).  The whole place stinks!  I need to salvage what is left of the kitchen and somehow chip the burned mess out of the oven before I can turn it on again.  With my arm the way it is, this is going to be very interesting.  I should sell tickets.  And, like a criminal returning to the scene of the crime, I am going to attempt cooking dinner (stir fry – no oven needed).  Then I am watching four (count ‘em) 4 hours of television.  Last Sunday was the best viewing in ages.  First comes ROME, then Gallactica (Starbuck can’t really be a Cylon) and then that absolutely magnificent Masterpiece Theater presentation of Jane Eyre. As a fan of the latter, I think this might be one of the best versions to date.  The costumes are period perfect, exquisite.  I might even dip into the container of mint chocolate chip…

IMMIGRATION

This is an absolutely fascinating take on GWB and immigration reform in TX.  I think it is a must read to understand why the man is the way he is on immigration.  Bottom line, when he was Governor, no immigrant bashing was allowed in TX.

"A big part of it is growing up in West Texas and understanding the culture of both Texas and Mexico and recognizing that the vast majority of Mexicans ... want to come to the United States and ... secure a better future for their families," said Ray Sullivan, Bush's press secretary in Texas...."

 

And that's the rub - morality.  Is it morally justified to punish a child for something their parents did?  If so, then send 'em all back to Mexico and be done with it.  If morality is involved, then we need to treat them as decent, viable human beings who, like any other child, is subject to his parent's domination, therefore has no say in why he/she is here illegally.

Did anyone catch the Q&A in Iowa today.  Boy did she blow it.  For the first time she was truly ironically funny, but very telling.  I can’t quote it exactly but it was something like, ‘boy have I dealt with evil men’.  From the smirk and grin everyone knew who she was talking about.  But then she tried to fiddle-fart around and just plain old stepped in it.

 

Everyone talks about her vaulting ambition, her coldness, and her arrogance.  Yes, she has all of these characteristics.  I am not going to fault her for those.  When a man has them and rises to the top, he is a SUCCESS.  When a woman has them, be it Martha or Hillary, they are a BITCH.  More power to her.  I don’t mind this at all.  Women should be allowed to be arrogant, ambitious and powerful if they want to be, and should not be criticized for shattering that glass ceiling.  That is not my complaint about her.  Heck, we all know I completely disagree with her political stance.  She’s liberal and a Dem, enuf said.

 

BUT – the answer to that question was so telling.  She wants us to think, because of past experience, she knows how to deal with evil men.  She sure does, she either cuts and runs, hides, or takes it.  Hillary Clinton is a fake.  And Hillary Clinton knows it.  Now you know why she is so cold and arrogant, she is hiding the fact that she is a spineless coward.  How do I know, because in many ways I too am a coward.  

 

My cowardice is different from hers, brought on by over half a lifetime hiding from a stalker and living in a state of siege fearful of each noise outside my bedroom window at night, just knowing he was trying to break in, when all he was doing was toying with my mind.  My remedy?  A very good friend bought me a shotgun, and taught me how to use it.  One night when the stalker was outside my house, I called 911, then went outside with the shotgun and started shooting.  He crossed the road and the last I heard of him was climbing the metal fence in a distant cow-pasture.   Another very good friend, co-sponsored the Federal interstate stalking law, getting it through Congress, sometimes I think just for me.  (Yes, the jerk did cross state lines with the stalking, and yes, it was Lindsey who worked on the legislation). 

 

The more I think about it, the more I realize much of Hillary’s cowardice may stem from the same thing, only different.  She is married to a man with an ungovernable temper.  If they were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Blow living in a doublewide in Little Rock, one wonders at the abuse that might ensue.  As they are not Mr. and Mrs. Average Joe, but Former Mr. & Senator Mrs. the Secret Service probably saves them from themselves and his temper.  And, this is where I lose respect for her.  My biggest complaint about Hillary Clinton from day one is not that she is cold, arrogant, and ambitious it is the fact that she can’t do it on her own, that she must hook on to someone else and ride his coat-tails.  Martha made it to the top on her own.  Hillary can’t make it on her own and she knows it. 

 

Hillary Clinton likes the personal and moral courage to make the very difficult decisions.  If she can’t get up the courage to do what so many women in the country do, throw the philandering jerk out and make it on your own, then how can she protect the country?  Why am I disgusted with her?  Simple.  I’ve watched as someone I know deals with this very issue.  She faced family and friends, chin in the air, and went full speed ahead into her future.  Everyone was furious and blamed her, until we finally started hearing about 21 years of living with a Borderline Personality Disorder (just about what Hillary deals with).  The poor thing lived in a state of siege for one fifth of a century.  She, along with other women had the courage to face facts and do something to make life better.  Hillary can’t do this.  If she can’t clean up her own very messy personal life with Bill, how can she go after Evil Doers?

 

Now I know why she is such a control junkie, just like the person who recently gained a divorce.  I see so many of the same defensive traits.  In fact, I’ve often commented about these in my friend, coldness, control, and a certain amount of ambition.  Now I understand why on both accounts.  Both women are struggling to survive.  I just wish Hillary Clinton had the courage to truly stand up and assist other women in her position.  Until she does this, the poor thing doesn’t deserve to be the President of the United States.

 

PRIMAIES 2008

This is an interesting turn of events.  The big hit of the Conservative Summit was a two term governor who is the most qualified person to run for the job, but – he needs to change his name to John Smith.  Jeb says he isn’t running.  Too bad, way to bad.  What about the VP job?  His dad would blow a gasket if he were to be on the ticket.   Another highly qualified person who has the good sense not to run, Joe Lieberman, says he just might endorse a GOP ticket in ’08!   More Romney flipping and flopping.    I think Captain Ed has one of the best commentaries about Giuliani entering the race that I’ve seen to date.  And he contrasts Giuliani and Romney.  The LA Times doesn't like Giuliani's 'prickly' style.  Brownback is getting just a little testy about his Iraq stance.
