MY RANT FOR THE DAY: GOOD TEACHERS
The two most important educators in my life were my 9th grade Latin & 11th grade English teacher, Judy Beaty, and my 11th grade American History and 11th & 12th grade journalism teacher, James D. Puckett. They were two of a kind, Republican, determined, and excellent educators. Mrs. Beaty instilled in me a love for Roman history. Every time I watch an episode of
After a disastrous personality clash with my 9th grade science teacher (the last straw for her was when I skipped school to go meet Ted Williams, ended up with my photo with him on the front page of the local paper, and was excused for the day!) she had me assigned to remedial classes. Two years later, I was sitting in a remedial American History class, driving Mr. Puckett crazy because he had to create two different tests, one for the other kids in the class and the other for me. He checked my files and discovered I had the highest IQ of any student in the history of my high school, thus far. Within hours my schedule had changed and I was put in all honors classes, but his American History class because he wanted to keep me in the class.
Mr. Puckett was a remarkable man, my political and journalistic mentor. A disabled vet, he was in the battle of Tobruk, absolutely devoted to General George Patton. My assignment for his history class was to read the biography of Patton and Patton’s Last Days for credit. He was captured by the Germans and spent a year or so in a Nazi POW camp, where he was horribly disfigured via beatings and abuse. He escaped and joined back up with Patton. When Patton liberated the various concentration camps, he would send Mr. Puckett in to ‘handle’ the victims of Nazi human experimentation. Patton couldn’t stomach what he found and saw. The experience left Mr. P. an alcoholic. Several times I asked him about what he found (rashness of youth and all that). He would never tell me other than, “They were no longer human.” He told how he would go in and put a gun to their heads, saying it was the most humane thing he could do.
The experience destroyed his life. But, it did not leave him bitter. He went to AA, and kept large gallon bottles of vodka in his cabinet in his class room with notches on it for how long he was sober. No one ever questioned or commented on the fact that they were in his class-room. No one dared to do so.
The one thing Mr. Puckett taught me was to look at both sides of history, politics, and current events. He was one of the ‘best’ Republicans I’ve met in my entire life. When conservatives question why I look at both sides of a story and sometimes do not take the conservative party line, it is because of Mr. Puckett. He taught me how to think and how to question, and what questions to ask. He made me hunger to be a writer.
Mr. Puckett did not live long enough to read anything I wrote. I was fortunate enough to be able to give Mrs. Beaty the first draft of The Second Mrs. Earp to read. Her reaction to it? “You have made my entire teaching career worthwhile.”
Sometimes I don’t think they make teachers like this today. Teachers are no longer allowed to use creativity, and are hamstrung with ‘no child left behind’. But, every once in awhile you come across a great teacher. Ironically, two of my friends are great teachers, one teaching history the other English and language arts.
Mark Dworkin, who edited TRAVESTY, is a history teacher in
Alicia Annala is my ‘other sister’. She teaches creative writing, English, and language arts here in Ruidoso. I was a ‘special guest’ in her class a few weeks ago and watched her with the kids. They love her and she loves them. She truly cares about them. Alicia is dealing with a very serious case of lupus, but it doesn’t stop her, not for one minute.
Do you have a teacher who deserves to be praised? Please do so. They have one of the most important jobs in the world, and one of the most thankless.
THE GREAT CAT SOAP OPERA
Brunhilda is feeling much better! I can’t get over how well she is doing, in other words, very annoying. Rums has been a little stinker. Maggy came to clean and Rumsfeld was his usually naughty self. There is still no word on Georgie. Maggy reported that the birth father is doing well. They never see him but he’s definitely in the barn eating. I’m just so glad to get rid of him! I think I told you yesterday about Miss Piggy baiting Rumsfeld. Funny how even a kitten is smarter than the brightest dog! Oh, her tail has started to grow. I picked her up last night and the little stinker is getting heavy.
How the Grinch Tried To Steal Easter, Part II – I am shocked to discover the scholarly world is treating James Cameron’s titanic fraudulent claim as just that, fraud. It is much ado about absolutely nothing. You need to check out yesterday’s Pink Flamingo. I have quite a bit about the linguistics of the situation, which completely debunk Cameron’s claim.
Dinekes Anthropology Blog takes a shot across Cameron’s bow with DNA comments. The best part about all the DNA uproar is the fact that the only possible way to find any DNA from Christ is to do a DNA test on the Shroud of Turin or any of the other ‘relics’ that are alleged to have ‘drops’ of Christ’s blood. The fun part of all of this is the fact that if any two of these items have the same DNA we have Christ’s DNA. And – we have proved the Gospel to be just that – true. Let’s DEMAND they continue with their DNA study and include those holy relics.
