OUTRAGEOUS TERROR TACTICS
Yesterday I reported on an alleged plot to tunnel from Mexico into Cochise County to Ft. Huachuca to bring down the base and generally terrorize the good, though sometimes xenophobic folks of Sierra Vista. I mentioned that I felt it was probably a hoax. Unfortunately, due to the results of just way too much shopping, my brain wasn’t working. I mentioned it might be a hoax, but let it go. Then when I mentioned it to someone it dawned on me that Ft. Huachuca isn’t exactly on the Mexican border. In fact, according to my rough calculations, Ft. Huachuca is anywhere from six to seven miles (at the closest point) to the Mexican border.
Anyone with half a brain who knows anything about the terrain down there knows we’re dealing with desert, mountains, and some nasty terrain that only the Apache knew how to navigate through about 120 years ago. Check the Google hybrid map and you will realize it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to tunnel through this terrain without sophisticated machinery. It isn’t going to happen.
Also – anyone with half a brain knows that they have – well let’s just say I doubt if even a hopped up hunter could get into that specific territory, let alone an Iraqi terrorists. This is one of the staging areas for some of the most advanced intelligence equipment we have. If they can’t detect an incursion from 7 miles across the MOUNTAINOUS desert into Cochise County, then we’re in deep dodo.
The anti-immigration xenophobes who populate Cochise County would love to find just one ‘TERRORITS’ coming into the US from Mexico. This is the stuff of their wildest fantasies. Then, they could truly shut down the borders. The problem is, to date aside from some CHRISTIAN Iraqi refugees who seem to get picked up in Mexico and sent back to certain death, well, so far they’ve come up with a big fat goose egg.
One of these days, the usual anti-immigration Group Speak suspects will figure out they’re being lead around with a chain through their noses. Until then, we will continue to see outlandish stories like this, and watch as conservative anti-immigration types wax poetic about national security.
Bottom line here – before you start freaking about Iraqis coming into the US via Mexico and tunneling into a major intelligence gathering military instillation, go visit the County in question. You’re realize it’s nothing but Tom Tancredo’s pipe dream.
Oh, and when you do visit the area, stay in Tombstone at the Larian Motel, the best place to stay in the whole are! (the owner is a friend of mine).
Photos about Ft. Huachuca’s history.
In fact, it makes me wonder if someone from the Tancredo campaign did not release this information now (but dated back to May) just to make him look good. Sorry, but I’ve learned when you smell a rat, you get a rat.
