CAROL ANNE GOTBAUM UPDATE
Yes, the Phoenix cops have lost yet another inmate the VERY SAME WAY Carol Anne Gotbaum died. According to The Feathered Bastard, "...In most cases, of course, such video does not exist. It's certainly nonexistent in the case of Archie Poole, who died in PHX PD custody Wednesday night/Thursday morning, not long after being arrested and cuffed by them. Below is the info. given out by Detective Stacie Dergie of the PHX PD's Media Relations Unit. I'll be following up on this story as well, so keep checking back.
Suspect: Archie R Poole Jr. B/M, 11-28-65, died at hospital, NOK has been notified
Vehicle: 1986 Black Ford Thunderbird, AZ plate 160WDN, registered to suspect
We have impounded the car as evidence however it has not been searched yet so I do not know if any drugs or drug paraphernalia were found in the car. The suspect did have some bruising and swelling to his face but no broken bones or fractures. This investigation is still ongoing and I do not have any more information to release tonight. Below is previously released information. Thanks!

Subject: In Custody Death at 2230 W Roeser
Suspect: B/M, 41 years old, died at hospital, next of kin have not been notified
On 10-3-07 just before midnight officers riding in a two man patrol unit were patrolling a neighborhood in the area of 24th Ave and Roeser. They noticed a car parked in front of a known drug house in that neighborhood. A short time later while still patrolling they noticed the same car parked in front of a different known drug house in the neighborhood. When the car left they attempted to make a traffic stop in the area or 20th Dr and Atlanta. They made the attempt at 11:56pm (10-03-07). The driver did not stop for the officers and continued for a few blocks at which time the driver stopped abruptly and got out of the car. The driver started walking from the car but then turned around and got back in. Officers were approaching the car as the driver got back in and gave him commands to get out of the car. Witnesses described that both officers were on either side of the car trying to open the car doors and ordering the driver out of the car when the driver sped away.
The officers got back into the patrol car and were able to locate the car again in the area of 23rd Ave and Roeser. The driver drove off of the roadway and into Lindo Park at 2230 W Roeser. He then bailed out of the car and started running through the park. The officers chased him on foot and caught up with him. He was fighting with the officers as they were trying to take him into custody. Other officers arrived to the scene and they were able to take him into custody at 12:03am (10-4-07). None of the officers used a taser or pepper spray. They used physical force to take the suspect into custody. Shortly after they handcuffed the suspect he became unresponsive and at 12:06am the officers requested that the Phoenix Fire Department respond. The fire department responded and transported the suspect to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at the hospital at 12:57am. We will wait for the autopsy to determine cause and manner of death as well as any toxicology results. As with any in custody death situation there will be an investigation by our homicide unit as well as an internal investigation by our Professional Standards Bureau. None of the officers was injured in this incident...."

The Feathered Bastard also tells us there are more video angles that haven't been released by the cops.
"...Mike Manning has said that "positional asphyxia" could have begun once the cops were on her and handcuffing her. The PHX PD's culpability may lie in what we don't see on this video. There's no video in the holding cells. That's PHX PD policy. But this woman was distressed and likely needed medical care, especially if she was so hysterical that she was able to choke herself to death on her restraints. Hill stated that Gotbaum was checked on 6 to 8 minutes after she was put in the holding cell. The question remains, should the cops have stayed with her the entire time?
Interestingly, according to the police report, Gotbaum's husband Noah did call the cops after his wife was arrested to alert them she was depressed and likely suicidal.
"She is suicidal," Noah Gotbaum told an unnamed PHX PD communications staffer. "She is...alcohol abusive...She is also in deep depression, and the police have to understand that they're not dealing with someone who's just been drinking on [a] flight and acting rowdy. That's not what's going on here."
The police report indicates this call came in about a half-hour before Gotbaum was pronounced dead at 1529 hours, or 3:29 p.m. on Friday. According to Hill, Gotbaum was arrested about seven minutes before 3 p.m., right around the time Noah Gotbaum called.
Reporters didn't get the police report until after the press conference. I had to rush downtown to get my copy. I wonder if the information in Noah Gotbaum's call was relayed to the officers who had Carol Gotbaum in custody.
The cop trying to revive Gotbaum after she was discovered unconscious ended up with a mouthful of Gotbaum's vomit. That was the most colorful moment of the entire press conference. As far as Gotbaum's arrest goes, Hill said the PHX cops are not going to stop cuffing suspects behind their backs, which is standard operating procedure. (No duh there.) I asked Hill about another death in police custody in South Phoenix within the last 24 hours, but he didn't have details...."

The NYTimes ran a profile of Gotbaum today. Then from ABC Local is a piece that is sickening. Is this how people are treated by cops? It is truly terrifying.
"...Gotbaum was on her way, alone, to check herself into rehab in Tucson. She missed the flight from Phoenix to Tucson, and caused a ruckus, including throwing her cell phone and narrowing missing a passenger. Police restrained her, left her handcuffed and alone, and she died.
We know all this.
What we're learning tonight is what happened. Sort of.
Cops are not addressing the cause of death -- the medical examiner will do that. But we are learning about the efforts to revive her - about how she vomited while cops were giving her CPR, which I'm told is not unusual. And about how the officer she threw up on vomited himself, while continuing to give her CPR. Did she strangle herself by trying to get out of her handcuffs, which were shackled to the wall? Cops won't say. Did she die on her own vomit? Cops won't say.
Why was she traveling alone from the Upper West Side of Manhattan, across country, to check into rehab? That question is perplexing. I've never heard -- and no one I've talked to has heard - of someone traveling alone to enter rehab. There is always someone -- at least one person -- who goes along.
There are reports she went to an airport bar after she missed her flight. Hard to imagine a chaperone would have let that happen to someone on her way to alcohol rehab..."
A QUICK MINI RANTWe know all this.

Now you now why I don't fly. I've had more airport temper tantrums than this woman every thought of having. I never threw anything, but I sure wanted to do so. Something nasty has happened to this country since 9/11. Not only have we lost our sense of humor, but we've lost our sense of freedom and the ability to express ourselves in an emotional and embarrassing manner. We are now expected to march to the beat of Homeland Security and never, ever question why. I don't know about you, but I've reached the point where I would rather be a little less safe and a little more free.
I've also reached the point where I don't like the direction any of this is going. Because we have been robbed of our sense of well-being, we've allowed many simple logical freedoms to be taken away from us. When do we stand up and put an end to it? We all know who the enemy is. The problem is because of the enemy of political correctness we must all give up freedoms we need not give up at all.
