Today I emailed back and forth with a blogging colleague for whom I have quite a bit of respect. He is an unabashed and unashamed conservative. Once upon a time so was I, before becoming so suspicious of anything that says “conservative”. We automatically know to handle anything “liberal” with a grain of salt. The problem is we are far too trusting of any site that says it is “conservative” and uses the secret handshake and knows the password to the club-house.
We all know the average liberal media is biased against GWB, Republicans, and anything remotely resembling the Bush Agenda. They are (usually) biased against the War, are politically correct and have what Bill O’Reilly calls a “Secular Progressive” agenda.
When I was writing TRAVESTY and dealing with the lies and prevarications Frank Waters told not only about Wyatt Earp and his family but himself and his family background, I discovered there is a difference between “Truth” and proven verifiable fact. While there are liberal sites that deal in liberal “Truth” they pride themselves on using verifiable fact. Granted this is often told from a certain point of view, but everyone has the right to do that. Consequently, I have discovered that there are more than a handful of excellent liberal publications and sites that, while presented their own version of “Truth” they utilizable actual verifiable facts.
I’ve also discovered that there are more liberal sites that deal in actual, provable, verifiable facts than there are conservative counterparts. The Washington Times has an editorial stance and upper echelon executives who are verified associates of white supremacists and members of the National Socialist Party. The owner of the paper, Sun Myung Moon, has bought and paid, spending billions, to be the conservative bastion of the nation, just to cement his position as the actual representative of God on Earth. He is a cult leader.
Conservative stalwarts like World Net Daily and NewsMax may be long on “Truth” but they play fast and lose with actual verifiable facts to the point where I honestly don’t know how the get away with the things that are written. One of these days they are going to end up getting people killed because of their lies. Townhall is as biased on the right as is the Huffington Post is biased on the left.
The problems is you cannot take anything any conservative writes at face value anymore than you can take anything a liberal writes at face value. Sources are sources and provable, verifiable fact is provable verifiable fact. Doesn’t matter if it is right or left, Democrat or Republican. Agenda is agenda and everyone has one.
Over the years we’ve bought into this abject blather promoted by our trusted conservative talk show hosts and pundits that they are RIGHT and liberals are WRONG. What happens, though, when conservatives aren’t right and liberals aren’t wrong.
Okay, there is another reason I do this. When I first began researching the life of Wyatt Earp there were basically two books available to me. Stuart Lake’s Wyatt Earp Frontier Marshal presented Wyatt Earp the Saint. Frank Waters’ The Earp Brothers of Tombstone presented Wyatt Earp the Demonic Monster. Who was right? The only way I knew how to come up with an opinion of my own was to make a list of those who approved of Wyatt Earp. Who were they? What sort of lives did they lead. Then I did the same with those who thought he was the Demon from Hell. Funny thing, the people who approved of Wyatt turned out to be rather impressive. Those who did not were quite often shady characters with very specific agendas. I think the same thing holds true when dealing with liberal or conservative sources. Check the agenda. Then start checking the known associates. I know it sounds tacky, but sometimes you might discover a perfectly acceptable conservative who sounds rational and reasonable, then you discover he and his wife socialize with the head of the National Socialist Party. Do you really want to accept this person’s information at face value? Sorry, I don’t.
