What is the Greatest Treasure?

THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY:  I would love to have your comments on them.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST TREASURE?

First, we all know the greatest treasure is the gift of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Now we can get back on track, but we must leave all religion out of this discussion.

Last night I was watching the end of National Treasure.  I like the film.  It has flaws, but it is a fun romp through American Revolutionary War history.  When they finally discover the treasure of the ages, the first thing noticed is are the long though destroyed scrolls from the legendary Library of Alexandria – the knowledge of the ancients.  I always get goose-bumps at the thought of the possibility that this long lost knowledge might someday be restored through various discoveries.  Then I realized, while the topic of the film was the quest for the treasure, the greatest treasure of all was KNOWLEDGE.  I began to think about the things we value and what we consider to be the greatest treasure.

What is the greatest treasure?  Is it knowledge, sicneice, freedom, space, riches, the market, family, friends love?  People view it differently because we are all different.  I began thinking about what I considered to be the greatest treasure of all.  Believe it or not, I came up with an answer.

To me, the greatest treasure:

The Declaration of Independence

The Constitution of the United States of America

The Bill of Rights

Everything else is fine, but without the freedoms guaranteed in these documents, what good would all the riches in the world be?

Don't forget my Tancredo expose over on Blog Critics.  It is generating many interesting comments.

MY RANT - When Republicans Fail to Face Reality about "Republican" Heroes

Every once in awhile you come across a post from someone allegedly so darn smart, that is so absurd it is laughable.  Well, this is true about Michael Zak’s new site, Grand Old Portal.  That’s fine.  But, his take on John C. Fremont as hero?  Of all the Republicans one should be ashamed of, John C. Fremont was probably the very, very worst.  He was an incompetent egotistical political hack who had the good fortune to marry into a prominent political family.  His wife was his greatest promoter.  Without her, he would be the butt of many historical jokes.  I recommend David Roberts’ A Newer World, Kit Carson, John C. Fremont, and the Claiming of the American West.  Excellent. I reviewed it for a new defunct publication.  Fremont’s Fourth Expedition is one of the most infamous debacles in the history of the American West.  If it hadn’t been for Kit Carson, Fremont wouldn’t have survived his first expedition, let alone gone on to be a hero for the GOP?  If he is a hero, I am a Democrat.

John C. Fremont was the territorial governor of Arizona in the late 1870s – 1881.  Get the picture? October 26, 1881 – Tombstone, AZ, The OK Corral?  As far as I am concerned Fremont was absolutely directly responsible for the disaster, the mess that was Cochise County.  He is the governor who appointed John Behan, that political hack and Cowboy’s Best Friend, to be the Sheriff of Cochise County (family friend thing) over Wyatt Earp, a Republican.  (For more information on this see my book TRAVESTY, p. 225, 241, 371, also see Casey Tefertiller’s Pulitzer nominated biography of Wyatt Earp, p. 86-86 concerning Fremont’s abject incompetence managing the Arizona Territory.).  He spent very little time in the A. T., leaving the territory in a constant state of total disarray.  Not only was he guilty of pandering to the Democrat controlled legislature and press, but he failed to notice John Behan’s baser characteristics, including allegations of spousal abuse and in competency while working in Prescott.  Behan, always on the take with his hand out, personally co-operated with the outlaw Cowboys in Cochise County.  When Fremont finally left the territory, Cochise County was virtually in a state of armed insurrection with the Mexican government threatening to cross the border and deal with the constant incursions into Mexico by the Cowboys (ironically much the same way Mexican drug runners are coming across into Cochise County today).  It was only through the actions of Wyatt Earp (a life long Republican) and his Vendetta Posse that a second war with Mexico was prevented.  Fremont was, in my estimation, also an associate with N. H. (Old Man) Clanton, thus further setting up the disaster that was to become Cochise County.

On p. 225, n824, I wrote, “Hayes initially offered Fremont the territorial governorship of Idaho.  Fremont was worried about the climate in Idaho, as his son had tuberculosis, so he requested the Arizona Territory instead, hoping the drier air would do some good.  Fremont had a hard time winning Senate confirmation but after months of debate he was confirmed.  His new job paid only $217 a year, and Fremont spent an inordinate time away from Arizona by trying to improve his finances by soliciting potential investors for personal speculations into mining or cattle.  In referring to Governor John C. Fremont, it was written, “…on the face of it he seemed to be the carpetbagger par excellence.” Fremont was one of the great American tragedies.  he was a man with extraordinary potential, with exceptional connections through his wife, the daughter of powerful Senator Thomas Hart Benton.  Unfortunately he could never rise above the scandal his mother created by running away from a wealthy and well placed husband and taking up with Fremont’s father.  Illegitimate, John C. Fremont spent the rest of his life creating a fantasy father in much the same fashion as did Frank Waters.  Roberts, pp. 109-111.  He was a failure as a senator, was court-martialed for his role in the capture of California, and failed as a presidential contender and as a Civil War general.  it was as if “…he pursued an almost deliberate course towards disaster…”  He was “old before his time, tired, and guilty of so much self-deception that Josiah Royce, in his History of California, called him a fraud and a hypocrite.”  Every grand scheme he envisioned as Governor of the Arizona Territory “was a combination of the grand and the venal”.  Lamar, pp. 200-1, Rolle, p. 248.”

The worst of it is every Republican is going to go lock-step and believe Zak.   If he had wanted to write about a famous Republican hero who actually did make a difference, he should consider writing about Wyatt Earp. Yikes!

I usually post late in the evening, but because I am trying to beat the traffic on my phone system, I may end up posting early, or terribly late, until Windstream gets its act together.  Last night I ended up on the phone with tech support until 11:30.  I finally managed to get hold of a woman.  I know this sounds sexist, but I’ve discovered women techs are usually easier to work with when dealing with computers.  They do not assume that, just because you are a woman, you know absolutely nothing about computers.  She started running all sorts of tests.  Last night I could not get any sort of ISP signal.  I finally posted the blog using dial-up AOL, and paying the 800-number surcharge, since AOL has no number here.  Well – she discovered something was wrong on their end!  She then told me it could be several days before things were working again, but put in a work order.  This morning my DSL is blazing fast!  I also discovered even when there is a slow-down, it is still about 10X’s faster than dial-up, so something is wrong with their connection to my system.  I love it when I am not wrong!  I don’t know how long the speed will last, or how long the service is going to last, so I am up early, working.

Mommy Cat was quiet yesterday.  I closed the door to my bedroom so should couldn’t move the little ones.  There are only two she can pick up now.  The calico is getting too big for her to carry.  I kept the door cracked in the nursery, and would lock her in for a few hours at a time.  Things went too well.  The babies are drinking water.  I think they are eating, but have yet to see them do so.  The moment they start pooping on their own, we can litter train in a few days.  Then, I can get them to their new homes.  PLEASE!

Bill Richardson is the GOP’s worst nightmare.  If the Dems truly want to recapture the White House they would put hand the nomination to him on a silver tray.  I am embarrassed to say my mother called me early this morning and asked me to send him an email telling him that if the GOP runs anyone like Brownback, Huckabee, or Tancredo she would vote for Richardson.  It is ironic.  The Dems would never go for Richardson because he is too ‘conservative’.  Richardson has some appeal to the conservative voter, and would vacuum in the Reagan Democrats in a minute.  Fortunately for the GOP, the Dems are so whacky liberal the governor of my state has about as much chance as a snowball in Hades.

Earth to 24 fans:  It’s just a television show.  Earth to liberals:  24 is just a television show.  You had your fun with West Wing now it is the GOP’s time to have a little fun.  Deal with it and shut up already yet.  Note to Ankle Biting Pundits, shut up already yet about Battlestar Gallactica being an allegory for what is going on today, with the Cylons as Islam.  Keep it up and the liberals will pull the plug.  It is good science fiction, PLEASE don’t blow it by waxing conservative all over it.  We all know the story-line.  Look, libs are having enough problems dealing with 24.  I don’t care about that one.  But Gallactica is some of the best acting on television.  LEAVE IT ALONE!  (all this is tongue in cheek, please note)

Aliens and FM radio – in other words, it’s sorta like the movie Galaxyquest.   “…It turns out that the radiation from distant cosmic hydrogen has the same frequency as radar, television and FM radio broadcasts on Earth….” Cool.  With my luck, the alien who would zoom in on my frequency would be Jobba the Hut!

They’ve found out why the 1918 Spanish Flu killed, by testing the resurrected virus on Macaque monkeys who died in eight days instead of 21.  Aside from the whole animal testing thing, which is distasteful in this case, why on earth play with this virus?  They have found no other flu virus so deadly in monkeys and spread so quickly.  What the heck are they thinking about?  Why on earth even announce the findings or that they have the virus.  Talk about a terror possibility!  There are times when geniuses need keepers.  I think the people who did this need to be in the cages instead of the monkeys.   Then the other day we read about a strain of superbug that is killing young people in the UK – by extreme fluid in the lungs.  What is the connection?

There is a possible “new” inexpensive cancer treatment – make that cure.

Fascinating new archaeological site discovered in Peru.

Remember that UFO report from WND that was getting so much buzz?  This is what I've been waiting for.  Now read their comments.  Then read the WND religious take on it.  One of the comments refers to a NewsMax article a few years ago.  Bottom line on this report - looks like it was radio tower lights, not the 2nd Coming that WND quoted.

I thought Mexico was doing nothing to help with the Drug War?  If so, why are they sending 4 kingpins to face drug trials here in the US?

Now I understand why Colorado is hyperventilating about illegal immigration.  The state is being over-rung by illegals from Mexico running drugs, using the interstates.  Okay, that makes sense.  Same thing happened in SC.  The little community were I lived was one of the drug distribution centers for the country.  It was very terrifying, like living in a war zone. People need to understand it is not an immigration problem, but a DEA and gang related problem.

DEMS GONE WILD

Opinion-Journal – When Will Algore Melt?

Chris Dodd is not going out for re-election.

PLEASE NOTE:  I will try my best not to take cheep shots at Hillary.  Why go after her personal life when there is so darn much fodder, politically?

PRIMARIES 2008:  Obama’s war on baby boomers.   US News on the Romney Buzz.  I’ve come to the conclusion all this MSM about Romney is to promote a character who has no real chance of winning.  Hillary would squash him like a roach in the general election. Flap  has news that CA is moving their primary to Feb. 5.  Who benefits most from this?  Could it be Giuliani? Remember Hillary's cattle futures?  Political Pit Bull on Obama.  Captain's Quarters on RichardsonTancredo goes postal over speech delivered in Spanish.  Chuck Hagel, independent run?  The Richardson campaign staff.  He did promise to announce over our local radio station here in Ruidoso.  They gush over him.  Now I'll be forced to listen to that dodo.  Romney is heading to Israel for a tour.  Yada yada Yada!  The Tancredo Watch 's snarky comments about TT and Iowa.  You gotta love it.  Brownback received little attention with his announcement.
