On this day in 1929 in LA, Wyatt Earp died.

I'll tell you a story

A real true life story

A tale of the Western frontier

The West it was lawless

But one man was flawless

And his is the story you'll hear.

CHORUS

Wyatt Earp, Wyatt Earp, brave courageous and bold.

Long live his fame and long live his glory

And long may his story be told.

He came to Kansas

To settle in Kansas

He planned on a peaceable life.

Some goods and some chattel

A few head of cattle

A home and a sweet loving wife.

CHORUS

He wasn't partial

To being a marshal

But fate went and dealt him his hand.

While outlaws were lootin

And killin' and shootin'

He knew that he must take a stand.

CHORUS

He cleaned up the country

The Old Wild West country

He made law and order prevail

ANd none can deny it

The legend of Wyatt

Forever will live on the trail.

CHORUS

(From the LA Times)

The West lost another of its few remaining frontier gun fighters
today with the death here of Wyatt Earp, once a peace officer
at Dodge City, Kan., and at Tombstone, Ariz. Mr. Earp's
colorful career led him through a dozen fatal conflicts with "bad
men" of the Old West. He was 78 years old.

Earp and three brothers, Virgil, Morgan and Jim, together with
Doc Holliday, were principal figures in the stormy days of
Cochise County, Ariz., where Tombstone is located. Their
conflict with the Clanton gang of cowboys, shortly after which
Morgan Earp was killed from ambush, and during which two
famous gunmen died, was followed by an investigation.

The Earps, led by Wyatt, then a Deputy United States Marshal,
were exonerated on the ground that they had acted as peace
officers.

Wyatt Earp gained further public notice when he was chosen as
referee of the Tom Sharkey-Bob Fitzsimmons fight in San
Francisco
. He wore a six-shooter in the ring, and no protests

were made at the time, although many were heard later.

Among the friends of Earp were Bat Masterson, Wild Bill
Hickok and other famous figures of the early West. In Alaska,
during the gold rush, Earp met Bill Hart, the motion-picture
actor; Wilson Mizner, playwright, and the late Tex Rickard, all
of whom were close friends.

Earp had been ill for some time. He left his bed the day before
Rickard died to send a telegram to his sick friend in Florida.
The exertion caused a relapse.

Earp left a widow, Josephne; and a niece.  The funeral will be

held Tuesday.

Several  years ago I wrote an article about Wyatt Earp as a senior citizen, his death and his funeral.

BREAKING:  Star Trek 11  - Shatner talks

The event of the day!  Hot Air has the original theatrical trailer for Star Wars.  You will sit there going ‘Oh my gosh.”  I suppose it goes to show you can’t judge a flick by its trailer!

My Tancredo Expose is up and running over at The Subway Canaries.  It is in two parts.

The babies are moving quite well.  The little red guy is trying to climb up onto a shelf.  They are also attempting to play.  I fixed them some Iams in water, but Mommy ate it.  The little calico does her own thing.  It is quite cute, actually.  There is something wrong with the little read one’s hind legs, very definitely.  I watched him walk today.  He just flops around like a seal, then gets up some steam and goes on about his way.  He is walking better but I don’t know how much he will improve.  Bat Masterson had a problem with his hind leg, but I think it was more a birth injury.  He still has a limp, but that doesn’t stop him (unfortunately).

And for those of you following the saga of The Africa Queen, aka my 21 year old niece Rachel, well, the good news is she is back in the US.  The bad news is her airline connections are screwed up and she hasn’t brushed her teeth since Thursday evening!  She is in Raleigh, safely in a hotel, probably channel surfing while using up all their hot water.  She will be back in Memphis tomorrow.  Naturally her coming home party was canceled until the morrow, which gives her 17 year old sister yet another day to figure out how to con her out of the car they share and put all the designer items back in Rachel’s closet.  (My nephew has considered selling tickets to the fight which will go down in history.

What I’ve not been able to disclose but only hint at is where she was and exactly what she was doing.  She has been up on the border between Sudan and Kenya documenting war crimes and acts of genocide.  Along with video taped interviews she has photos of some of the survivors of the atrocities and their stories.  After her first trip to the border, she was invited back to do more extensive interviews in a region where no one has yet to go for their stories and for the documentation of just exactly what is going on in Sudan.  We’ve all been a little reluctant to talk about just what she has seen and uncovered.  I don’t think it takes any stretch of the imagination to tell you how fearful we have been for her safety.  The fact that Al Qaeda fighters from Somalia have been pouring over the border hasn’t helped.

Rachel has uncovered and has documented evidence that Al Qaeda is involved in the fight in Sudan (which most people know).  She has also discovered they are not only eliminating anyone who isn’t a Moslem, but are also exterminating Black-African Moslems, doing an ethnic cleansing so they can set Sudan up as an Arab-Islamic state.  In a few days I will have more of her story and some of her remarkable photos.   I’ve read the first transcript of her interviews.  The stories are horrifying and heart-breaking.  The genocide in the Sudan is part of the War on Terror.

HRM Nancy I – this is only going to get better.

Blogging chicks has a carnival today!

How often are kids’ lives destroyed by out of control school officials?  Take the case of this kid who is now in trouble because of the actions of an administrator.

Another one of the pols I worked with is making a few headlines for himself, finally.  Gresham Barrett, R-SC was in on the inquisition of Condi Rice the other day in the House.  Gresham lost his first race when I was county chair, then won the next race, and hasn’t looked back.  He’s a very nice person from a nice family.  His father owns this absolutely magnificent renovated plantation house out in the middle of nowhere in SC.  (I’m not telling where it is).

PRIMARIES 2008:  Novak says Obama (my mother calls him Bambi) will be announcing his exploratory sometime in the next week or so.   And, Novak gets into the Romney, U-Tube video where he is denouncing Reagan. I go back to one of my older premises, that Rudy is being treated strangely by the press.  Case in point is this article out of  Delaware.  I know the other day I heard him comment that he had a schedule for his plans.  Drudge is now linking to WND.  Don’t forget, Drudge is in the pocket for Romney.  The link is about Dobson refusing to endorse McCain.  Frankly, I don’t know what the big deal is on this one.   You might also want to check out Flap’s version of Rudy in DelawareHillary's problems.  McCain on Iraq.  Hillary wants out - of Iraq.  Giuliani talks turkey.

How about CSI Great White style?

How does one put this delicately – inside Sandy Berger’s pants.

Why has Europe abandoned Israel?

I wasn’t going to hit illegal immigration today, but while working on the World Nut Daily story below, I discovered this interesting little tidbit from People for the American Way (which isn’t the most trustworthy because of their funding, but it raised a bunch of red flags).

“Judging by this WorldNetDaily column by Jane Chastain, the Families First on Immigration’s “compromise” proposal looks as if it is appealing to some on the Right who have traditionally been among the most militantly anti-immigration. Why the change of heart?  Even the most extreme anti-immigrant advocates understand the message voters sent to Congress – by not electing or in some cases not re-electing many GOPers who had strong anti-immigrant positions. They see the writing on the wall and from their weakened position are now cynically attempting to leverage their “support”  for something that already has strong bi-artisan support and is likely to happen anyway, in order to get something else extreme that they have always wanted – doing away with birthright citizenship.

In one fell swoop Chastain impugns the motives of all who support comprehensive immigration reform while simultaneously insulting hard-working immigrants:

The motives of Democrats and President Bush are clear: The former expects to lead these new, largely impoverished, uneducated voters around by the nose; the latter wants to satisfy his business supporters who feel they are "entitled" to cheap labor to manufacture their products, mow their lawns and clean their toilets.

Chastain’s primary reason for “hope” is that this proposal pushes to eliminate so-called “anchor babies.”  Chastain’s animosity to “anchor babies” is long-standing and so it should come as no surprise that she would support the Families First plan to change the Constitution to eliminate this provision.  In 2004, Chastain suggested that any temporary guest-worker program should also require sterilization of applicants:

Therefore, the only way to assure the American people that this "temporary" status truly is temporary is to seal up the wombs – sterilize – those who apply for guest-worker status. Or else change the law that grants citizenship to anyone who is born here regardless of the status of his or her parents….”

People for the American Way is making this up, right?  WRONG.  It comes straight from a World Net (Nut) Daily column by Jane Chastain “Before Opening the Borders, Seal Their Wombs!” I don’t know about you, but to me this reeks of some other era in time when politically

Anatomy of yet another WND anti-immigration scam.  I don’t know about you, but I am beginning to get the feeling WND is the source for much of this anti-Hispanic hatred.  This is the body of the email that came to me:

“Medical professionals in South Texas have identified another disease that has apparently slipped across the border – caused by a rare brain worm that can be fatal and is being spread by unsanitary food-handling practices. Read the latest now on WND.com.” Take this screaming headline for example.  It is now being circulated through this extreme conservative email forum I’ve subscribed to for several years.   Then, check out Americans for Legal Immigration and see how their little bigots are handling the story.

Rare brain worms latest border disease Fatal disease found in developing countries with poor hygiene habits hits South Texas

“Medical professionals in South Texas have identified another disease that has apparently slipped across the border – caused by a rare brain worm that can be fatal and is being spread by unsanitary food-handling practices. While not yet classified as a "major outbreak," several cases of cysticercosis have been identified in South Texas, a spokesman for San Antonio's Metro Health District told KENS-TV, San Antonio. Symptoms for Renaldo Ramirez, 50, of Houston, began with mild headaches. The tile worker, who immigrated to the U.S. from El Salvador 20 years ago, told KENS-TV he had been eating most of his meals at mobile kitchens because of the convenience, but after his ordeal with brain worms, he insisted on preparing his own food. "He's scared now. He's scared of any food from outside," his sister, who interpreted for him, said. "It was a mild headache, but it wouldn't go away," Ramirez said. "It was just there and it wouldn't go away with Tylenol." Clinic doctors gave him blood pressure medicine, but a few days later, he passed out and did not awaken for eight days. Dr. Aaron Mohanty, an assistant professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas Medical School, found and removed a cyst caused by a tapeworm larvae living in Ramirez's brain. Undiagnosed and untreated, he could have died within hours.”

Why do people fall for WND’s fanciful manipulation with the facts?  THEY ARE LYING – sort of – well, manipulating the truth.  Now check out the Free Republics usual set of bigots and their commentary.

Now, go read the CDC fact sheet, which is linked to via WND.  It is a completely different can of worms  - sorry.  Cysticercosis is the parasite one acquires when eating undercooked pork.  The person who contracted the parasite is a LEGAL Salvadoran immigrant, but because he is HISPANIC, that is a code word for DIRT.  Try this other CDC (also linked) mortality-morbidity report.  Problem is, there are no reports of anyone who is HISPANIC getting the disease.    Here is a professional study from 2005 where 115 patients in Houston had been diagnosed with the problem.  It is not an epidemic and does not spread unless through unsanitary conditions and undercooked pork.  Only six American born people had contracted the disease and all had been to central America.

“…We noted a close association between rural pork husbandry in Latin America and neurocysticercsis in the United States. All immigrants in our study ate pork prior to immigration, 83% raised pigs, and many noted that the pigs lived inside their houses. While pork consumption per se does not lead to cysticercosis, it is associated with development of taeniasis, which in turn poses risks for cysticercosis. Indeed, most of our patients had a family history of taeniasis and many reported symptoms consistent with prior taeniasis. This is in contrast to findings from most clinical series, in which cysticercosis patients in the United States are only rarely found to harbor tapeworms…”

In other words, if you are not living in a country where the disease is a problem then people here don’t have a problem.  It is contracted by either eating uncooked pork or someone handling the pork and then not washing properly.  It is a parasite not commonly found in the US.

“…“If he does not properly wash his hands and then handles food or a food preparation area, another person who then eats the contaminated food can unknowingly swallow the tapeworm eggs. These eggs then cross through the intestine into the blood circulation and evolve into cysts. The cysts get "stuck" in tissues such as muscle or the brain and eventually may cause severe infection in humans,” says Ostrosky-Zeichner, who also serves as medical director for epidemiology with the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System….”

Avoiding cysticercosis while traveling

Avoid eating raw or undercooked pork and other meats.

Don’t eat the meat from pigs that are likely to be infected by tapeworm.

Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet and before handing food.

Wash and peel all raw vegetable and fruits before eating.

Drink bottled water, and avoid fountain drinks or any drinks with ice cubes. “

Check out the anti-immigration organizations and get their take on things.

ALPAC  The article is by John W. Whitehead, common citizen, right?  WRONG. He’s the head of the Rutherford Institution, another ultra conservative group.  Just a little digging shows us Whitehead has been anti-immigration for years.  This article is just another way to promote his extreme anti-Hispanic views!

Now, how did I find all of this, just by googling the following, “cysticercosis illegal immigration” and taking it to its logical conclusion.
