THURSDAY, JULY 31

Things around town are drying out, even though there is still a ban on using tap water for drinking.  No one knows when the local eateries can start serving water, tea, and coffee, let alone ice because the moronic Ruidoso News, the poorest excuse for a newspaper I've ever encountered, has yet to update their web site.  You'd think with a local crises they would use the gray matter between their shoulders and try serving the community for a change, but forget that.  The track will probably open on Saturday, but forget reading about it in that ...   more »

WEDNESDAY, JULY 30
We began the game of Musical Kittens this morning around 5:30AM.  I caught Rumsfeld trying to "play" with the sand colored 'red'.  I picked her up and snuggled her.  She's a baby doll, but rather placid.  The other little red tabby is feisty, and did a lot of spitting at me when I picked her up.  Mommy Cat wanted them in the living room.  I locked Rumsfeld in the bedroom and helped Mommy Cat carry the babies up to the living room.  She went down for the little mottled calico while I was photographing the other two.  ...   more »

MONDAY, JULY 28

Once again my blogging is basically limited to the events here in Ruidoso. I spent several hours around town taking more photographs.  I've taken nearly 300 or so.  Tomorrow The Pink Flamingo will be back with a tale of how the anti-immigration industry has conned good and decent conservatives out of their minds.

I've been hearing from friends all over the country.  How bad is it?  Are all the roads closed?  It must be terrible, with all that flooding.  How many people are homeless?  Is it safe to go out on the roads?  Let's try the answers ...   more »

SUNDAY, JULY 27

It has been a very rough day.  My wake-up call came around 7:30 with the parents calling to tell me they were evacuating "The Downs" was flooding and was being evacuated.  We had anywhere from 5 to 7 inches of rain in the past 24 hours.  I can't get a straight answer on the actual amount.  I was up quite late (or early) dealing with my leaking skylight.

Have you ever had one of those nights where sleeping is fitful and very strange.  I kept thinking I was hearing things outside or seeing flashing lights through my ...   more »

RACE TRACK FLOODED!

The world famous race track at Ruidoso Downs is underwater - somewhat.  The river is over-flowing into the far lane of the track which is washing away, but the blessed casino is open! Last night we had a good 4 inches of rain.  The dam up on the Mescalero Reservation (Inn of the Mountain Gods) is over-flowing into the Rio Ruidoso, which is not a good thing.  When I went by the track it looked like they were evacuating the horses.  They say the Rio Ruidoso is now 6 to 10 feet over crest. Four ...   more »

SATURDAY, JULY 26

I am having trackback problems.  If I insert them manually they work.  I can pick them up from link-fest and get yours in, but mine may not work.  Blog Harbor insists it is a problem with Tucows.  Evidently no one is using track-backs anymore and I am just out of touch.  I've also been given the bad news that one of these days the blogware platform is going to crash.  If I've not migrated to my WordPress platform, all is lost.  I don't like WordPress. I have the URL and all of that mess, so it is ...   more »

FRIDAY, JULY 25

A KITTEN UPDATE:  Mommy Cat brought the little ones out today for me to see.  They were born on July 6th or so, which means they are nearly 3 weeks old.  For babies that age, they are a very good size, and look rather healthy (for a change).  One of the two little red/white ones is already walking!  The little gray one is NOT a rat!  She is a very pretty mottled gray calico and could have long hair. One of the little red/white ones and the little gray were trying to play, which is a good ...   more »

WHAT GIFT GIVING SAYS ABOUT YOU?

It is true confession time.  While you may think I am this horrible "B_T_H", when it comes to gift giving, I am a total push-over.  I'll be honest.  I love giving presents.  Nothing to me is more enjoyable than shopping for the perfect gift for someone, then presenting it in a perfectly wrapped package.  It probably doesn't amount to much in this crazy mixed up world of ours, but to me it is a momentary sigh for a person.  It is just a quickie little thing that says, "Someone thinks you are important."

THURSDAY, JULY 24

Tomorrow is the big day.  I have tickets for the 11:30 show in Alamogordo.  Can't wait.  Unfortunately I also have Altar Guild, which means I'm up and at church by 7AM!  The one reason I'm doing the early show is so I can get home before it gets too late.  It is going to be a very long day tomorrow.

Finally, some dinosaur news

WEDNESDAY, JULY 23

I am playing with my new Amazon Kindle.  Deal with it.  It is the neatest, coolest toy I've seen since my sister's talking Woody Woodpecker puppet told our grandfather Froehlich to knock it off, knot-head!  It was Christmas night, 1963.  We were sleeping in the downstairs "kid room" twin beds (designed by some big you know what artist and are now worth a fortune - my mother has 'em).  Grandy came in to tell us goodnight.  My sister told him he had to kiss Woody Woodpecker good-night.  She pulled the string for Woody to tell Grandy goodnight.  ...   more »

Thirteen Reasons Not to Display a Child’s Photo on Your Blog

I’m not as much of a child hating grouch as people think I am. I am a photographer.  I love taking photos of children.  For reasons of liability and security I do not.  I like doing studies of children’s faces.  There is so much honesty in them.  I do not do this.  If I take photos, I use the parents’ camera and never download the photos into my own system.  I never post children’s photos on my own blog.  If I do, ...   more »

TUESDAY, JULY 22

There are three kittens.  They are now 12 days old.  The little gray one that I still think is a rat is the biggest.  There is a white one and then the red tabby.  I HAVE HOMES FOR ALL THREE!  Yes, you read correct.  I have homes (allegedly) for all three kittens.  Can you believe it?  I can't.  It is just way too good to be true.  They will go 2 litter-box homes, and never go outside.  We do have a tendency for one kitten in each litter to die, so we will deal with that when ...   more »

MONDAY, JULY 21
Have you noticed what the major topic of conversation is across the nation?  While Barack Obama wants to think the whole world is talking about him, and we're being treated to doom and gloom, the real conversation is about Starbucks.  Is ours closing?  Which one in Roswell will survive? (They're closing the one by Wallyworld).  Well, we're saved here in Ruidoso.  Ours is staying open.  To celebrate her good fortune running the church bazaar (so far the take is over 10,000!) Josie sent me over to the establishment in question for some sort of a chocolate ...   more »

LESSONS IN FAITH & FORGIVENESS

There are some fascinating forums online dealing with the Wild West.  I think the best one is moderated by a friend, James Wright.  Earlier today James emailed that there was a heated discussion about one of my books, A Church for Helldorado, Endicott Peabody's 1882 Earp Era Tombstone Diary.  I am including my entire rebuttal, and additional comments.

I learned something today.  I don't think we truly know how to forgive until we have experienced Christian forgiveness.  Forgiveness is a very important thing.  In the Lord's Prayer, we are taught, "Forgive us our ...   more »

SUNDAY, JULY 20
Early this morning a vicious and pre-meditated attack occurred.  It was obviously premeditated.  The victim was left shredded, shivering in fear and cowering in terror. In other words, Mommy Cat beat the you know what out of Rumsfeld. From his version of the story, Mommy Cat was then joined by Doc Holiday, who proceeded to claw and bite his fragile poodle flesh.  The moment he could get away from them he came running back to bed and dove under his blankie and rolled up in a little fetal ball.  Five minutes later he was running up and ...   more »

OR A BIG STEP BACKWARD?

In many ways the summer of 1969 was the most magical in my life.  It changed my life, or rather formed the foundation for all that I am.  It had nothing to do with sex, drugs, or rock and roll.  It wasn’t about Woodstock, even though my parents and grandparents were actually in said town antiquing the weekend there-of.  It was about scientific and engineering feats that captured our imagination.  As a nation we held our heads high.  My girlish fancies were captured by a ‘fairy tale’ young prince who was finally allowed to meet ...   more »

Today was the annual church bazaar.  For those of you following the sordid tale of my "raffle" traumas, we didn't do bad.  We sold nearly $1400 in raffle tickets.  The best part is my friend Raymona won the Grand Prize of over $1800 in jewelry and local gift certificates.  I have one friend, who, when last seen, was chasing her down the road trying to mug her for the spa certificates.

The best part of the day was watching the fruits of one mother's Audacity of Faith.  The woman, who died several years ago, and my mother, ...   more »

FRIDAY, JULY 18
I think many of us who are Christians give very good lip service about “faith” and our “walk” with Christ.  For nearly 8 years I have been writing a book about “praise”.  It is not finished probably because I have a heck of a lot to learn.  I live by the philosophy:  Rejoice Always, Pray Without Ceasing, and in Everything Give Thanks (for this the world of Christ).  Perhaps it would be better to say I try to live by it.

This week things have happened that have challenged me, my praise, and my basic Christian ...   more »

Happy Birthday Dustin Boulden  21 Years Old!

It has occurred to me that if it weren't for the fact of the POTUS election this year, there would be absolutely no news.  Is it boring, or is it me?  Let's face it, it's boring.  And frankly, I don't give a you know what about the new Batman movie. They lost me when Adam West was no longer Batman.

Tomorrow is the decorating phase for the annual church bazaar.  I SWORE I would not be doing it, but a friend told my mother she needed my help.  Naturally...I think ...   more »

It's been a rough, horribly stressful afternoon, finally over.  I am exhausted.  I was going to play more fun and games with Sheriff Joe but just can't make it. I can't think beyond the current family crises which is non medical (for once).   Today's Forward Day By Day is amazing:

Thirteen Things on My Table
(While I Am Listing Them)

This week I am going to try and behave myself and not insult anyone.  Is that possible?  The stars of this Thursday Thirteen are Doc Holiday, Bat Masterson, and Beverly Sills.

I write on a dining room table inherited from my grandparents.  It is the most comfortable writing location I’ve ever enjoyed. I’ve basically been writing on the same table, same chair, different footstool since 1994.  While using the table I’ve completed and published 2 novels and 2 non-fiction books about ...   more »

I spent the day in Las Crucas with parental medical appointments.  My mother's PK reading is still bouncing up and down like a basketball.  By the time I arrived back home, Mommy Cat was playing Musical Kittens.  She moved at least two of the little squirts from the closet and deposited them under the bed.  It has dawned on me that Mommy Cat has a method in her parenting madness.  Until their eyes are open, she likes to keep them sequestered in a closet.  Then she moves them under a bed.  I saw her move two of ...   more »

I'm tired of bad things happening to very good people.  I'm tired of good people dying from cancer.  To make that affront to all that is, oh well, are those vile Westboro monsters who are planning to defile Tony Snow's funeral. Stop the ACLU has the video link to Fred Phelps, but I will not link to his YouTube video.

I first started listening to Mike Gallagher in the late 1980's when he was doing post-Rush drive time for one of the local stations in Greenville, SC.  He's never really changed.  I remember when he made the ...   more »

Mommy Cat must be nursing something.  She has "tanks".  She's starting to come upstairs more often.  For the early part of the week she stayed in the closet - constantly.  I have no earthly idea how many surviving kittens we have, and I'm not all that sanguine of their survival.

Tonight was one of those family events.  The problem is it is our "adopted" family.  The way I look at things, you're stuck with your 'real' family and get to chose your "adopted" one.  We're lucky.  The Annala's are wonderful people.  Sydney (soon to be age 9) played the dwarf "Tambourine" in a new version of Snow White.  Naturally she stole the show, and learned how to play a musical instrument in just a week - the tambourine. I've spent my entire life avoiding children's theater, and can't believe I went.  It was adorable.  Sydney turns 9 ...   more »

WEDNESDAY, JULY 9

It has rained all day.  Forget unloading the car.  I have yet to unpack and have things scattered - everywhere.  The Blackberry had problems.  I finally managed to get around to dropping by Alltel around 5PM.  I stopped first at Wallyworld for a new DVD player ($34).  I also had to buy a new set of towels for the bathroom.  Every towel I own is dirty - thanks to the constant drip, that is now a small waterfall.  Part of the ceiling has detached and is starting to look really messy.

I spent a good 45 minutes ...   more »
