Twenty-three years ago last night I was in Atlanta slobbering over Sherrill Milnes as he did Simon Boccanegra with the Met. They ended their annual tours a few years later, but I sure did hear some great music while they were in town. My mother and I would stay at the Colony Square Hotel, get a suite. My aunt would fly up from Palm Beach and my mother's best friend would also drive in for the week. We would do 6 nights of intensive opera, good stuff, too. The thing I remember about that specific week was ... more»
NOTE: I am having problems with Blog Harbor and posting. I’ve been trying for about 2 hours to get something to “take”. I’m listening to the Met (Live) do MacBeth, one of my favorites. Carlos Alverez, doing MacBeth sucks. He’s okay, but he’s no Sherrill Milnes. Jimmy is incredible though. I saw a performance there, years ago, where I was sitting front row, two seats to the right of Jimmy. During the ghosts of Scotland past scene, they both became ‘tickled’. It was so much fun watching them keep from smiling. Something amusing happened with one of ... more»
Unfortunately, I feel an opera binge coming. Deal with it. I have been in a state of denial for years. It's back. My mother will be very happy. I NEED A TOSCA FIX!
Actually I think I'm just sick and tired. I've been working on several posts this afternoon. During the process something that is halfway between Ebola and The Plague has hit, getting worse as the evening progresses. I'm sitting here shivering and shaking, trying to stay awake. Since about 3PM I've been dealing with the most annoying sore ... more»
I am only doing two posts today. I’ve spent much of the evening piddling around and making some changes. I think I solved the slow loading problems. All I did was move my TLB badge to the right column, re: Beth Cleaver’s smart advice a few months ago. Then I moved the site meter badges. I discovered my site meter was causing all the problems! I hate that thing. I’ve added a registration form, and made the RSS forms easier to find. If you have been reading TPF this evening, you may have noticed a few color ... more»
Costel Busuioc is no Paul Potts, but he could be another Pavarotti wannabe with a voice to go along with it. Evidently he came out of nowhere on the Spanish version of American Idol, or what-ever and just started belting his way to fame. Dubbed the "Romanian Pavarotti" opera fanatics are already doing side by side comparisons of his voice and the late, incredibly great Italian master. If you listen to the side by sides of Costel Busuic and Paul Potts, they have completely different voices, like the Great Luciano and Placi.
THIRTEEN REASONS WHY I AM A DEVOTED MARXIST The Pink Flamingo's 64th Edition THURSDAY THIRTEEN (A two-fer)
This Thursday Thirteen is dedicated to all the devoted Marx Brothers' fans, including my father and my friend Mark. The Marx Brothers were pioneers of comedy and the movies. Their work made it possible for future masters in the field from Alan Alda's Hawkeye to Saturday Night Live, to Laugh-In. They were the kings of comedy before people even knew what comedy at the movies actually was. If you have never seen their movies you are in for a treat. My favorite is ... more»
I wish I believed in live blogging. If so I would be irate. I am the most loyal Republican in the world, BUT when John Glenn, American Hero, comes on, these stupid blank blank (deleted due to Lent) morons in the media need to shut up and snap to attention. That’s Glenn! Have they already forgotten who he is? He is John Glenn Hero Astronaut. You stop everything you are doing and treat him the way you would have treated Ted Williams. There aren’t many people in that league, but John Glenn and Ted Williams are there ... more»
